We're obviously up here too early!

The snow is pretty much gone in this area. Or so we thought! Sure, you can still see the odd patch here and there... but it's pretty much gone.

Yesterday we drove over to the Morris Island Conservation area to go for a hike.

And really, most of the snow was gone. Until you get to the edge of the Ottawa River, where there is still lots of ice...

It will be another two to three weeks before the leaves start coming out.

Still lots of ice in the river.

They had a very typical Ottawa winter this past season.
No sign of global warming up here this year!

Ruth, enjoying the view.

The water is moving fast at this point.

Still lots of ice in the calmer waters though.

What's this? Hiking in the snow?!
We're obviously up here too early!

This garter snake was enjoying a spot in the sun.

Off he goes!

Our rental car. 2018 Nissan Sentra.

We ended up doing 6.5 kms (4 miles) and got an hour and a half's worth of fresh air.

Looks like our short stretch of nice weather is over though. Calling for a high of only 10C (50F) today, a little nicer tomorrow, and then COLD over the weekend with a chance of snow flurries!

  1. Yup a bit early in the season, that ice should soon be gone though, Enjoy your time there while you can and keep warm.

    1. Don't forget that we are further north and they had some very cold temperatures here so the ice was pretty thick and it doesn't get lots of sunshine because it is shaded/sheltered, the river itself is totally open though.

  2. Garter snakes are such great things, totally harmless and bug eaters. We saw a tiny one the other day on our walk too, first of the season

    1. Yep, we like garter snakes, when you start seeing them you know spring is here. :-)

  3. I question your comment that Ottawa had a typical winter. It was colder, there was a lot more snow & ice and it lasted longer than is typical!

    1. Typical compared to historical norms. Not typical compared to the last few years.

    2. Actually, looking at the data, the amount of snow was higher than is typical, but only because of what fell during the month of January. The other months were pretty average.

People quickly forget what winters used to be like because some of the more recent ones have been milder with less snow. We remember what winters used to be like and when we were watching the weather all winter long we kept saying how it was so similar to those winters that we remembered as kids.
