Yesterday felt like March in Canada, not May in Canada. Pretty sure it must have been snowing in the nearby mountains.
And so, we were looking for something indoor to do. And apparently so was the rest of the city.
We had received a note from blog readers Jane and Chris asking if we wanted to get together. We always like meeting our loyal readers, so if time allows we make an effort to do so. Jane suggested a nearby shopping mall, and we drove up there to meet them around 11:00am.
Lots to talk about. Jane and Chris moved to Canada from England back in 2006... originally to Ontario, but now to Calgary. We talked for a while (thanks for the hot chocolate!), and then went for a few laps around the mall.
It was packed! You would think it was the week before Christmas!
I did some searching for somewhere for lunch. I had a craving for some Mexican food, so I looked for an authentic restaurant. Found one close to downtown, so we drove over to Jane and Chris's place where they dropped off their vehicle and we went to the restaurant together... to find it closed!
It's a long weekend here in Canada (Monday is a holiday) and there was a sign on the door saying they were closed until Tuesday. So we went looking for something else, but everything was either too expensive ($14 for the lunch special?!) or not what we were looking for.
Back to google, and I found a Mexican place on the other side of the river... "La Bodega" it was called.
The place definitely seemed authentic. Lots of Mexico paraphernalia hanging on the walls, and the guy who served us only arrived from Guadalajara last year.
Definitely Mexican tacos!
They were delicious. Exactly the way you would get them in Mexico! Not the same price though! Five tacos (three for me, and two for Ruth) cost $17.50 CAD ($13 USD, 250 pesos) with tip and taxes.
But, we enjoyed them anyhow.

So, we ended up having a good day despite the bad weather.
Today is bright and sunny though... so far. We have to return our car rental at 11:00am, and then if it's still nice we'll walk from there to downtown and then take public transport back to our AirBnb. We're due for some exercise!

It was lovely spending the day with you yesterday, we really enjoyed it. Sorry our weather was crappy, but it promises to be better today. Enjoy the rest of your stay here and safe travels on Monday. Jane & Chris.
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking time out of your day to meet up with us as well. We really enjoyed our day with you both, and look forward to meeting up again sometime in the future.
DeleteYou attract the Brits dont you lol
ReplyDeleteIt certainly seems that way! :-)
DeleteWhen I lived in Calgary, we used to brave the long weekend camping, some years it would snow, rain but sometimes it would be sunny. Always cold at night though. Also a rule not to plant anything before the long weekend due to frost.
ReplyDeleteIt was always the same back in Ontario as well. It was a crapshoot on what the weather was going to be like on the May Long Weekend.
DeleteEven years ago, my mother would say not to plant anything before that long weekend, as there was always the chance of frost, times haven't really changed!
From what I've read about global warming, the ice caps melt first to cool the areas not usually cool then when the ice finishes melting, the earth continues to heat up. I believe we probably are in the stage where the ice caps are melting causing coolness when it's not normally cool at this time of year. We in Arizona are experiencing abnormal coolness for mid-May too. Anyway, I couldn't help but notice all four in selfie are wearing glasses lol. I wear glasses too otherwise I couldn't read blogs on the internet LOL HAGD
ReplyDeleteKevin said that as being partly tongue in cheek! Mostly because they keep talking about global warming and technically the average temperature of the earth has increased ever so slightly since 1880 but we have had to deal with cold and rain since arriving back in Canada almost a month ago, it doesn't seem like it is warming at all!
DeleteI hope that price included the beer :)
ReplyDeleteFat chance on that! Didn't even have anything to drink other than tap water. Definitely not Mexico prices!
DeleteOuch on the price for the tacos! We had breakfast yesterday, chilaquiles with pollo two eggs and beans a mere 40 pesos, or $1.99 U.S. Makes you want to eat out three meals a day but that's how ex-pats get fat! SLDS de Michoacan.
ReplyDeleteYou are making our mouths water, Chris and also making us miss Mexico all that much more.
DeleteAlways nice to meet up with blog followers in our travels, so much fun, And your lunch looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is nice to meet up with blog readers, and to have a delicious lunch with them to boot.
