Smooth flight to Calgary

We had an uneventful flight to Calgary. Everything right on schedule. Arrived at 10:30am local time. A little chilly, at 7C (45F) though!

We hopped in an Uber from the airport to the car rental place. The Uber was pricier than expected, at $37 CAD, ($27 USD) for the 22 km (13.6 mile) ride, but it still made more sense than taking the local bus. And, our car rental is so cheap that we could justify the convenient but pricey Uber ride.

Our rental car was ready and we've got a 2019 Hyundai with all the toys and only 2,500 kms (1,550 miles) on it. For only $108 CAD ($80 USD) for the eight day rental.

We drove over to a park and Ruth had a nap while I did some computer work for an hour. Then drove to a local Tim Horton's and met up with Jaretta, Steven, and their 2 year old daughter Riley. They want to travel to Mexico in their big 40 ft motorhome, and so we had lots of discussion about the limitations of a rig that size. But, good for them for asking all the right questions ahead of time.

Then, we went for a walk near downtown. Not the nicest day, but the sun did come out occasionally.

The Peace Pedestrian Bridge over the Bow River.

Quite a few Asian tourists around downtown.

Downtown Calgary.

Just waiting for the nice weather.

But, the weather is supposed to get a little better each day over the next week. So we're okay with that.

And then it was off to our friends Harold and Kim. They were originally from Ottawa, and Harold is part of the group of guys I've known since I was 16 years old or so. He comes back to Ottawa every September for our guys weekend away. Nice to see their place in Calgary for the first time. Thanks for putting us up for the night!

And today we are driving the five and a half hours or so over to Cabri, Saskatchewan and the park that we worked at for four summer. Looking forward to seeing everybody there!

Ruth reminded me that I forgot to post pictures of grandson Cameron at his karate class. He goes four nights a week and really loves it!

Grandson Cameron, age 8.

Ready for sparring.

Moving too fast for the camera!

  1. Hi Kevin and Ruth, I am curious how you find such cheap car rental, especially in a city like Calgary.

    1. As soon as I know that I need a rental, I book right away at the best price I can find that day. Then, I use the alert system at autoslash.com that tells you if there is a price drop. But, you also have to check yourself regularly. I don't trust the alert system, although it did let me know of a couple of price drops. Otherwise, you just have to be persistent.

  2. Hi Kevin and Ruth, cool weather in Calgary as it is here in Ontario.
Re your question a few days ago around ads on the site, I didn't see them for a few days but they are there now. However they are off to the side and not intrusive. I hope they work for you!

    1. Yes, it was a bit cool yesterday but the temperature looks like it is start to warm up, our fingers are crossed.

Thank you for the feedback, it is always nice to know how others feel about the ads. I agree, when they are off to the side they really don't bother me but if they are in my face and flashing then I get annoyed. We will let them run for a couple of months and see how things go and then re-evaluate them to see it is worth it for us.

  3. Well done on the car rental - was it Thrifty? Airport car rentals tack on extra fees(surcharge for the airport) so if you rent off site it's usually always cheaper.

    1. No it was Hertz, and Kevin booked it through priceline. Yes, airport rentals are almost always more expensive, that it why he generally books with a company that is away from the airport.

  4. Being an English major (and editor), I guess I can't help myself -- but would you double-check when you find yourself "peeking" (vs 'peaking') around somewhere?
The other misnomer that totally drives me crazy is 'pouring' over something, when it should be 'poring.' Thanks for putting up with your fussity readers...like me. Reading the newspaper can sometimes be an invitation to join the loony bin, because of little slipups like these.

    1. You're not the only one, Cindy. I'm sure I make the occasional mistake too, but the one that drives me crazy is when "it's" is used incorrectly, such as, "The dog hurt it's paw.".

    2. I'm glad I don't let little things like this bother me.

      Fussity is a word?

  5. Wow Calgary looks like it's totally empty/deserted (Cindy Brick did I use the right word lol love your editing....have to watch my pouring/poring & peeking/peaking). And, Cameron is grown before our eyes as well as little Sadie. Yes, newspapers drive me crazy too...sentence structure sometimes don't make sense (not since lol).

    1. Nope, it was actually pretty busy, it's just the way that Kevin took the pictures that makes it look empty/deserted. Plus it wasn't a real warm day and there was a bit of drizzle coming down.

Cameron and Sadie are both growing fast. :-)

  6. As an English teacher for 30 plus years, I can tell you that those mistakes are very common and have little to do with your spelling abilities and grammar. It's how the brain functions and how it reacts at the moment you are writing.

You can even check your work several times and still not see the mistakes. Even the Grammarly app has it's, oops, I mean its mistakes to, I mean too.

    1. I tend to agree with you Chris but I do know that we always try to make sure that we have the right word in place, along with good grammar but even we miss those mistakes sometimes. :-)

    2. Spelling and grammar always came easy to me, but my best friend couldn't spell his way out of a wet paper bag, and wouldn't try. He is an excellent communicator, though. And that's really what is important.

    3. Kevin is normally picky about spelling and is one of the reasons that I try to proofread the post shortly after he has posted it but even I will miss a small mistake here and there as well, and I have to admit I probably wouldn't have noticed the difference with peak and peek.

  7. You all just make believe that Kevin and Ruth are in Holland instead of Calgary and just tip toe through the typos.

  8. The ads are fine with me with the exception of the ones that move. It seems they're almost all of women's clothing. The motion -- even off on the side -- is very distracting to me.

    1. I agree, I don't like those ones either. As for the ads, they all show up different for everyone, while you see clothing, others may see ads for resort vacations and others be mattresses, it is all done with algorithms.
