We have been so busy since we got here to Drysdale that we really hadn't had time to go out and explore the area. So we took a couple of hours off to do just that.
First stop was a nearby winery that had some views of the bay...

From where we were standing, Melbourne was about 40 kms (26 miles) away.
The Port Philip Ferry coming in.
There is a passenger ferry from Portarlington to Melbourne. But it's pretty expensive. They have a Tuesday and Wednesday seniors special for $14 AUD ($13 CAD, $10 USD) return. The regular seniors fare is double that, and the regular adult price is $32 AUD ($29 CAD, $22 USD) return.

From there, we continued around the peninsula to the lighthouse at Point Lonsdale, but it drizzled with rain a little bit... plus, the lighthouse itself was having some work done to it, so it was not much of a photo opportunity.
Good to get out and see some of the area though.
We've been invited to use a free parking spot walking distance to downtown Melbourne, so we're going to take advantage of that for Saturday and Sunday night. One full day in the big city of Melbourne (pop 4.5 million) will be enough.

Point Lonsdale, where my sister lives, a rarefied area of our state. Portarlington is nice too. The ferry has been operational for a while so I guess it is making money, in spite of it not being cheap. The drive is a long distance and at times with terrible traffic congestion especially on the West Gate Bridge, which I think you will use to get to Melbourne. Melbourne traffic can be as bad as New York traffic.
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed our day wandering around and finally getting a chance to see a bit more of the area. You sister is lucky to live around the Point Lonsdale area, it is really very pretty and peaceful, not sure if it is like that in the summertime though!
DeleteJust because a ferry is operational doesn't always mean it is profitable, sometimes the operations are subsides by the government, I know it is that way in Canada.
Driving into Melbourne today was nothing like the traffic in New York but it was a Saturday today and we only drove as far as the Yarraville area. I guess we will have a better idea when we leave here sometime Monday morning.
Your are correct. Point Lonsdale is very busy during summer holiday periods but it never feels too overwhelmed. No subsidy for that ferry.

We are so happy that you are enjoying our pictures of both the scenery and along with the wildlife and the birdlife. It is very much different than the what the Michigan area might have. We love all the colourful birds that they have here, they really are amazing to see.
