Beautiful start to the day at Red Pine Camp

We left Lindsey's house just after lunch and headed up to Red Pine Camp on Golden Lake, Ontario. It's almost a two hour drive from Lindsey's house... 170 kms (105 miles), plus we had some stops to make along the way.

First stop was a UPS store to drop off my camera and have it shipped to the Nikon service center near Toronto.

Including the packing, it cost $38 CAD ($28.75 USD) to have it shipped in for repair. Supposed to arrive there on Tuesday, so hopefully we will have an estimate for the repair cost soon.

Next stop was to pick up some expensive Canadian beer and wine for the weekend. And in actual fact, I have found that the best deal for beer here is to buy European beer in half liter cans in the liquor store. And it's real beer, not the watered down stuff that is most Canadian and American brands.

Then, we were off to say hello to Ruth's dad because it was right along our route. Just a quick 45 minute stop, and we will stop in again on our return trip on Monday. He seems to be doing fine, but of course there is a slight deterioration every time we see him and that is to be expected.

And then we were up to camp. Lindsey, Justin and the kids were up here for a whole week in July, and the kids loved it because they are at the perfect age. So Ruth and I had made a plan to bring the kids up here for Labour Day long weekend. It's not cheap... for two adults and two kids, it's $900 CAD ($680 USD) tax included. But, it's more of a rustic resort than it is a "camp". And all your meals and activities are included.

Ruth, doing Sadie's hair in our cabin.

The playground.

Shuffleboard in the pine grove.

Breakfast this morning was pancakes and scrambled eggs.
Yes, they do gluten free as well!

We dropped the kids off at Junior Program this morning.

Ruth, enjoying the view of Golden Lake.

There are 66 steps down to the waterfront.

Looks like a beautiful start to the day!

They have a lanyard system to grade the kids so that the lifeguard staff
know how good of a swimmer they are.

Maybe Ruth and I will take a canoe out later.

Junior program is only for an hour and a half... gotta go pick the kids up already!

    1. Yes, a bit expensive for sure but when you consider that it includes all your meals and activities which are numerous, including all kinds of water activities like tubing, water skiing, stand-up paddle boarding, canoes, kayaks, small sailboats as well as organized activities for the children and swimming lessons, it really isn't so bad. Plus it is a treat every once in awhile. :-)

Yep, it is a special weekend with the grandchild and that is priceless!

  2. Looks nice! Canadian rates for fun seem to be on the rise like places like that. But the kids will remember the weekend forever!

    1. It is really nice here. It is very laid back and everyone gets to relax. No meals to make and no cleaning up to do. They have Junior Program in the morning for children of all ages and swimming lessons after that and then in the afternoon they usually have activities that involve the whole family and camp for that matter and what is nice about all of this, is that if you don't want to join in you don't have too. So even though it is expensive, it is a nice treat every once in awhile and being our grandchildren up here with us is the icing on the cake. :-)

    1. We are loving the time up here with our grandchildren. Yes, I think that they do miss us when we are on our many travels. They are now getting to be a good age that maybe sometime soon we can bring one of them at a time with us on some of our adventures.

The weather is pretty much perfect for the weekend. :-)

  4. Yep, it may seem a little pricey until you realize it's being invested directly in those kiddos' memory banks & then it seems like an amazing bargain!

    1. You are so totally right and that is one of the many reasons we don't mind spending the money. It's not like we splurge on stuff like this all the time. We are having a great weekend up here with Cameron and Sadie. :-)

  5. This reminds me soooo much of a YMCA Family Camp we did every summer for almost 20 years, up until our youngest left for college. The camp was actually pretty rustic for what we paid, and some summers the food was close to inedible depending on who they had managed to hire on in the kitchen, but the memories made were absolutely priceless.

Enjoy your special time with the grands!

    1. As Kevin's mom below mentioned, this used to be a YMCA Family Camp many, many years ago.

When I first started coming up here with Kevin back in the early 80's the food was pretty bad then as well. They really have improved it a lot. We came in with low expectations for the food quality and have been pleasantly surprised, although it isn't really restaurant quality is also isn't too bad. It is very hard to cook for 200 to 300 people all at one time and to try and cater to all the different food allergies out there, we have to say that they doing a reasonable job of it. None of us have left the table still hungry. :-)

    1. They try to cater to all food allergies, which isn't an easy task when you are cooking for so many people all at one time.

It is a fun place for both kids and adults. :-)

  8. We went to a camp like that when I was little. My most distinct memory is skipping rocks into the lake.
