A great day to go see the RCMP Musical Ride!

A few weeks back, daughter Lindsey asked if we wanted to join them at the Ottawa Fall Horse Festival where the headline act was to be the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride.

If you've never seen the RCMP Musical Ride, it's quite the special show. Ruth and I have probably seen it two or three times before in our lives, but it's been a long time. Plus, it sounded like a fun way to spend some time with our daughter and her family.

So, we bought the tickets online in advance for a very reasonable $7 each They were $10 at the door.

It was also a great opportunity to really test out our freshly repaired camera. I actually think it is working better than when it was brand new! Lots of photos in today's post. Don't forget, you can click on the photo to make it full screen...

Granddaughter Sadie sitting on her dad Justin's shoulders.

Grandson Cameron had been invited to a birthday party and decided he wanted to do that instead so he didn't join us.

Yikes. $5 for a hot dog!

First stop was to gets some lunch. Fortunately, Lindsey knew the guys running the food stand, and we got a discount. Still, they were oversized hot dogs and I had mine with chili and cheese. Been a long time since I've had a hot dog!

People were lined up all afternoon for food... those guys made a killing!

Search and Rescue horses.

Free wagon rides.

Kirby and Todd.
These horses weigh 1,800 lbs each!

The kids loved Zak the burro!

Sadie feeding Zak.

Ruth, Lindsey, and Justin.

The lemonade guy did really well!

It was a beautiful late summer day here in the Ottawa area. A bit humid, as is usually the case here, but with a temperature of around 27C (81F) and sunshine, we'll take it!

They did a couple of jumping demonstrations.

Kirby, the work horse.

Taking a break in the shade.

They did a dog and Frisbee demo.
Man, those dogs could jump!

It was fun to watch!

Next up was the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride. The ride has been in existence since 1901.  Today, the RCMP Musical Ride consists of 32 riders plus the member in charge. It executes a variety of cavalry drills choreographed to music. The Ride tours throughout Canada and internationally between May and October, performing at approximately 40 venues each year.

Here they come!

I took a video for you.
Turn up your volume!

They spread themselves around the ring of the arena at the end so that you can talk to the riders and pet the horses.

This is Jacqueline, riding Elliot.
Elliot is 11, and has been performing for 7 years. He has even performed for the Queen!

We had a fun afternoon, and I'm glad we decided to go. You never know what the weather is going to do with an outdoor event like this, so we were certainly lucky in that regard. And it was great to see the Musical Ride again. I'm not the most patriotic person in the world, but the watching the ride is certainly one of those "proud to be Canadian" moments.
