Off to the hospital...

Busy day with the grandkids yesterday as we had to get them to their swimming lessons right after breakfast, and then after swimming Cameron has his karate lesson in the town of Kemptville, located about 60 kms (36 miles) south of Ottawa.

There's a short gap in between though, and they usually go to a nearby park and play for a half an hour before going to Cameron's karate.

So we pull into the park, and of course there's a big playground. The kids are like monkeys... and they LOVE the monkey bars.

So little Sadie (age 6) grabs my hand and pulls me over to the monkey bars so she can show grandpa how good she is. And she is good. I've seen her before, and she's far better than most kids that are older than she is. But really, she's still not tall enough to get up to use them!

But, she climbs up the side and was just getting to the top when she slipped and I thought she may have hit her face on of the bars. She started crying right away and I picked her up, expecting the worst. I was standing only two feet away and had seen it happen and it looked like she may have hit her mouth.

Fortunately, that wasn't the case. In fact when I had a quick look at her, she looked fine... no blood or anything.

But then I saw a little bit of blood under her chin. I carried her back to the van where Ruth got a medical kit and put a band-aid on it.

It was just a small cut... but it was deep and we both thought it might need a stitch or two. Oddly, it didn't bleed very much. We didn't have her Ontario Health Card with us, but we had to stop back at the house for lunch anyhow.

By this point, the tears had stopped and she wasn't really bothered. She said it didn't hurt either.

We went to Cameron's karate and then back home and had some lunch. It wasn't bleeding, and she seemed totally fine but we decided to take her to a clinic to have it looked at. We were going to visit my mom anyhow, and there is one close by.

But it's a weekend, and the clinics are either closed, or super busy! The only other option is the emergency room at one of the hospitals, but that would be a long wait as well.

We visited with my mom in the city, and then decided to go back to Kemptville to the hospital there. We figured that a small town hospital would not be as busy, and it turned out we were correct. After about a half hour wait we saw a doctor and he glued the cut shut, with a couple of small pieces of surgical tape, and a band-aid on top. Apparently the whole thing just peels off by itself after 4-5 days.

Here are some pictures taken over the last few days...

Sadie, Grandpa, and Cameron at reading time.

Good lookin' kid. Takes after his grandpa!

Quit taking my picture, Grandpa!

Reading time with Grandma.

Chester is just a big lap dog!

Phoebe and Husky.

No grandpa, you're not taking a picture of my chin with a band-aid on it!

Anyhow, if that's the worst that happened during our five days with the kids then so be it. We had fun with them, but parenting is best left to younger people. We both found our patience wearing thin at times and we quite happily look forward to their parents coming home this morning. By the same token, we look forward to seeing them again next Friday!

  1. Glad it was only a small “boo boo” for Sadie. You gave very beautiful grandchildren.

    1. We were glad that is all it was too! It hasn't slowed her down at all. :-)

Thank you, and we agree they are beautiful! :-)

  2. I'm not sure why it is, but I get far more freaked when my granddaughters get hurt, than I did with my daughters when they were young. Wiser nowadays, perhaps?

And totally get the exhaustion of being with young grandchildren in spite of absolutely adoring them. It's a reality check for sure, on how much less energy I have now, in spite of still being physically active, vs. when I was parenting in my 20's and 30's. And yet, like you described, always excited beyond words to see them each and every time.

    1. Probably because they aren't physically "your" children but we know exactly what you mean, I think we are the same way. ;-)

Yes, we have said there is a reason why "old" people can't have children! I think a lot of that is because our parenting techniques are different, so you act different to your grandchildren than you would had they been with your own children. Plus, we don't deal with them on a day to day basis all the time, where it is just part of your normal life. We look at ourselves as being very active but they still drain us, lol! :-)

  3. We’ve had quite a few split chins with our kids. Glad it wasn't too bad. Fun time with family!

    1. Yep, it is all part of being a kid! If they don't have cuts, scrapes and bruises then they can't possibly be having enough fun. :-p

  4. Whew, glad it wasn't too bad. I fell and split my chin open when I was around her age and had to have several stitches. Still have a little scar underneath my chin to show for it. Sounds like techniques have advanced a bit in intervening years!

    1. Us too! And this is why we took her to the hospital, to get it looked and stitched or glued up properly so that she will only have a tiny scar if any. I think if we didn't take her into the hospital then the split would not have healed up as nicely and she would have had a bigger scar. We loved the fact that they were able to just glue and tape it rather than stitch it up, it made it less traumatic for Sadie.
