The gang is all here!

Woke up to blue sky and sunshine yesterday and that's the way it was all day long. Definitely our best day for weather since we arrived here in Texas.

It was going to be a busy day. Ruth and I both had a lot to do getting Sherman ready for his big adventure. But, you can't let a beautiful day like that go to waste, so the first thing we did was to set off on a hike!

Bob and Denise were going to hike up to "the desk". So we joined them, as did Roy and Sue and Garth.

Bob, leading the way.

Looking down on Alpine.

Beautiful blue sky.

Wide open spaces.

Art?

Ruth, at "the desk".

There is a university here in Alpine, and the story goes that some students dragged this old desk up to the top of the hill and left it there. Odds are good there was beer involved that day! There is a piece of paper and a pen inside one of the drawers and you leave your name behind when you hike up there.

Heading back down.

The museum at the university.

The museum at the university is supposed to be quite good, and it's free as well. But it was already late morning and we still had to walk to the grocery store in town, and then back to the RV park. And we still had a lot to do! So we had to give it a pass.

Back at the park, I picked up another big package from Amazon. One of the items was a new kitchen faucet for Sherman. We discovered that the old one is leaking and so that's one of the things I have to get done. Also need to install a new roof vent cover and a lower baggage door catch.

And I had to install the antenna for our new radio. The group uses GMRS radios that are quite powerful. In fact you are supposed to have a licence for their use in the United States, but no licence is required for use in Mexico. This year, I bought the most powerful 40 watt unit so that the rest of the group will always be able to hear us even if we get separated.

Then I helped some of the others get their radios set up. We will test them all today to make sure everything is working properly for tomorrow's departure.

As this was going on, the last two rigs showed up. Everybody is here now! Great to finally meet Mona and Roger, and Martha and Larry after so many emails back and forth over the past few months.

And the next thing you knew it was 4:00pm and time for part one of our happy hour group meeting! I didn't get nearly enough done yesterday, so today is going to be a busy day as well. No time for a hike today!

And I never got time to get photos of everybody with their rigs. I promise I will do that today for you so it will be ready for you to read tomorrow morning!

Garth, Martha, Larry, Sue, Roy, Roger, Mona, and Denise.

Bob, Kevin, Jim, Aron, and Owenita.
Ruth was taking the photos!

So... busy day today, and part two of our group happy hour meeting this afternoon.

Then Sunday morning at 7:00am... we are off!

  3. When I was young, I wanted to build a home in middle of the desert. My sister was not so keen about my plans. She said 'It's ugly here and why do you want to live in middle of nowhere!?' Told her I love it here in middle of nowhere, the sky is clear and you can see for miles and miles. I look at these pictures and think 'Wow you can see for miles and miles.'

    1. We don't mind the desert if there are mountains to look at but if it is just a flat plain area then the desert would not be for us.

You could definitely see for miles up on Hancock Hill!

    1. No we haven't! I checked out Wikipedia about Sul Ross University and found it interesting but I didn't find anything that was overly funny about the history.
