Interesting day in Uruapan

We set off walking from the hotel/RV Park at 9:30am, headed for the national park located right in the city of Uruapan. Ruth and I have been here several times before, but it never gets old. It's a beautiful park, and an easy place to spend a couple of hours.

It was about a 35 minute walk all downhill.

With lots of barking dogs along the way.

This little one wasn't interested in barking.

At the entrance.

Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park has been a Mexican National Park since November 1938. It follows the headwaters of the Cupatitzio River which flows from an underground spring all the way through several different river systems to the Pacific Ocean.

Lots of walking paths.

Nice mural.

A big tree growing on a big boulder.

Lots of waterfalls.

Some of the falls are man made.

Ruth posing.

Some of us stopped for enchiladas.

Cheese enchiladas with chicken.
60 pesos ($4.15 CAD, $3.20 USD).

From there, we walked down to Uruapan's relatively new River Walk with more waterfalls. That then leads to the Fabrica San Pedro textile factory.

Uruapan's River Walk.

Big spider!

Fabrica San Pedro.

This old textile factory from the 19th century is essentially a living museum. Hand-loomed and hand-dyed bedspreads, tablecloths and curtains are still made here from pure cotton and wool, and are available for sale at the small in-house shop. The original machines are more than 100 years old and many are still used. Part of the factory also has been repurposed into an exhibition space, showcasing works by local and international artists.

There is a big event salon on the property.

There are some art exhibitions ongoing.

This is a busy piece!

Interesting to see the old equipment.

Spare parts!

Dyed wool drying.

Rafael, using one of the old machines.

I took a video of Rafael showing Ruth how the machine works...

It was an interesting day!

Today, we take the group to the Paricutin Volcano!

  2. Such a beautiful park. Thanks for the video. The rhythm of the machine is relaxing. It is so nice to see the good side of Mexico and not what we see in the news.

    1. It is a beautiful park, we always love visiting it and the rest of the group did as well.

We have been to Uruapan 3 or 4 different times now and have never been to the textile factory and we are so glad that we made the stop there. We love to see new and interesting things on our visits to Mexico.

It is unfortunate that Mexico gets such a bad rap with the media news. We have learned through our travels over many, many years that there are way more good things about Mexico than there are bad but people never hear about all the good things because good news doesn't sell!

    1. If you are going to visit this park in Uruapan then you also need to go to the waterfalls just south of the city called Tzararacua waterfall as well. I believe that you can boondock in their parking lot there. Here is our last blog post on it www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2014/05/interesting-driving-day-in-mexico-and.html.

Amazing equipment, and not sold for scrap metal...

    1. Personally I think I would need to find another profession, I really don't think I could earn extra money at either of those things, lol.

I think that once they got the machines up and running with some of the spare parts, they could then get rid of what they don't need for scrap metal and that could then help fund the renovations. We are sure there is some stuff there that would be of absolutely no use to them now.

  5. Nice to see you took the group back to this lovely park in the city. It’s definitely worth going back to several times. Our group didn’t see the textile factory last year though. Another interesting highlight for your group this year.

    1. This is a gorgeous park and no way could we miss taking the group here. This is one of those places that we just don't get tired of seeing. Yes, the textile factory was a new find to us as well as the River Walk that lead to it.
