Despite the long drive, I had a great day.
We hit the road out of Playa Ventura at 8:30am. We knew that including stops it would be a six hour drive. Ruth and I have done this route in both directions quite a few times. I'm only guessing, but we've probably done it seven or eight times. And it's a long drive.
It's only 263 kms (163 miles), but it's a narrow two lane highway with no shoulder. It's almost hard to believe that this is the major north-south route along Mexico's southern Pacific coast. And, it goes through lots of towns and villages. You are lucky to average 50 km/h (30 mph).
Friday's drive, 263 kms (163 miles).
But despite all of that, I still enjoy the drive. It's very scenic, and it's not white knuckle highway driving. We like this better than the higher speed toll roads.
There is a wide variety of road surface conditions!
And quite a few towns to drive through.
This was actually a pretty quiet drive through!
Welcome to the state of Oaxaca!
Things are getting a little overgrown.
They are actually working here.
Trimming the growth back by hand!
Building a new bridge.
Scenery along the way.
Hard to tell from the photo, but that is a huge tree!
Papayas growing.
Other than the fact that it's so baking hot, we like Puerto Escondido. However, the RV parking options are limited, and especially when you are a group of eight RVs traveling together.
The place we stayed at last year isn't available to us this year. They said they they are not allowed to have RV's park outside now.
So that makes it a bit difficult. A decent place to park an RV is not easy in Puerto Escondido. However, Ruth and I had stayed at a spot at Laguna Manialtepec about eight years ago and we thought it might do for the group.
We were having happy hour, when a pickup truck pulling a jetski and trailer came in and had to navigate himself around our rigs while backing down the boat ramp.
You could tell this guy had never backed up with a trailer before... what a circus. And then, when he finally got the trailer into the water, he backed in a little too far... and then simply left the truck there!
The water is above the rocker panels.
Too funny.
Sitting at happy hour.
Birthday boy!
Jim had read on our blog that I like scotch. So he brought a nice bottle of Glenlivet Founders Reserve, all the way from Idaho! Thanks Jim!
The water level is high here at the lagoon.
Soon, it will break through and drain into the ocean.
Sunset.
Ruth, Martha, Bob, Owenita, Aron, Jim, Roy, Susan, Garth, Denise, Larry, Roger, and Mona's arm. Sorry Mona!
Sure enough, we had a good meal. Pretty sure they will be busy serving us food regularly during our stay here!
