Airport camping

We said goodbye to Guthrie, Texas and headed further north. Not much to stop and see along the way in this part of Texas, but it's still interesting nonetheless.

This time, we had a pretty strong headwind... good thing, because it would make more room in the tank for some upcoming cheap gasoline! Ha... there is a bright side to everything!

We pulled in to Childress, Texas where the price of gasoline has been $1.04 per gallon ($0.38 CAD per liter) for more than a week now. The cheapest gas in Texas.

Scenery along the way.

There's a fixer upper!

We got Sherman's tank filled to the brim.

Childress is a busy little town with lots of truck traffic so we had no ambition to hang around. We did our weekly stock up at Walmart and headed towards nearby Baylor Lake where there was supposed to be a municipal park where they accepted RVs. But we got there and it was kind of dumpy. Plus, they wanted $14 a night. No thanks.

We continued on to the town of Memphis, Texas (pop 2,200) where they have a city park that has free RV camping. Not surprisingly, it was closed. But I had seen that they have a small municipal airport and Ruth and I have airport camped maybe 15 times and always had a good experience.

Sure enough, it would do just fine.

There was nobody around when we arrived, but a pickup truck drove up a while later and the guy went into one of the hangars. I went over and spoke to him when he came out and he said "sure you can stay here, did you want me to open the bathroom building for you?"

Nice guy.

The local town police came by later and we spoke to him as well. No problem.

Happy hour at the airport.

Slept great.

Today, we are headed to the big city of Amarillo. We were there exactly two years ago getting some major repairs done to Sherman, and we liked the mechanic and the shop that did it. He has a leaking brake cylinder that needs to be fixed, so hopefully they can get that done with no problems.

  1. I would love airport camping! Did you see many planes come/go?

    1. We love overnight parking at these little municipal airports. We didn't see any planes coming or going at this airport but we have seen some at other airports that we have stayed at.

  2. If you haven't been, just south of Amarillo is Palo Duro Canyon State Park and I hear State Parks have opened for day use. It has the second largest canyon in North America. Close by there is Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge $2 camping. Enjoy the area! We were supposed to be there last week but our trip is on hold :(.

    1. Kevin and I stayed a Palo Duro Canyon State Park back in April 2018. We really enjoyed our stay there and we were hoping to stop there again for a few days but now it isn't possible to go camping there as the parks are only open for day use and you must make reservations online. We really don't want to make the trip down there only to be able to stay for the day so it will have to wait for another time with things are back to normal again in this world.

Again, Buffalo Lake NWR is closed to camping but open for hiking and biking. It looks like a great spot and one that we haven't visited before so we will make sure to stop by there and visit it some other year. Thanks for the suggestions. :-)

  3. It might be wise to contact the Mechanic ahead of time so he can have the parts in stock.
Nice looking spot to spend the night.

    1. We don't want to do that because we aren't sure exactly what parts would be needed for that job and a couple of other things that Kevin wants looked at. They seem to be able to get parts delivered pretty quickly here.

    1. Nope, there sure aren't but then British Columbia rarely if ever gets a break on their fuel prices.

    1. Yep, it sure is a big state and when you don't travel fast it does take a long time to make your way out! As long as it is still cold up north, I don't see us leaving the state quite yet.

  6. That is a great price for gas! There are a couple of stations near us in North Carolina that are still charging $1.87/gal, which is crazy. We drove a couple of towns west (where we needed to go anyway) and paid $1.59/gal.

    1. It was a fantastic price for gas! We left Childress and the next station we saw the price was around $1.89/gal., not sure why it is so much cheaper in Childress but we were definitely on it and filled the motorhome to the brim. :-)
