I've been looking at Sri Lanka as a possible destination

Yesterday, I mentioned that we would like to travel somewhere different next winter. Despite the current world situation, I'm still optimistic that will happen. I've been looking at Sri Lanka as a possible destination.

Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, southeast of India. Population of around 22 million. It had a growing tourism business up until 2019 when terrorists scared everyone away and tourism was only just starting to pick up as things had returned to normal again over the last year.

But it's still one of those countries that you never hear of anyone visiting. It is more common for people from western countries to visit Southeast Asia... Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. And certainly, the Southeast Asia countries are on our radar as well. In fact, if we make it to that area, I wouldn't be surprised to see some stopovers in some of those countries. You don't want to go half way around the world and only see one country!

Sri Lanka is about the same size as the state of Georgia!

Yes, Sri Lanka is about the same size as the state of Georgia. But, it has a much more varied geography, and much more varied wildlife! In fact, with 26 different National Parks, and animals including elephants and leopards. You’ll also see monkeys, deer, crocodiles, flying squirrels, buffalo, and for those with particularly good eye-sight... chameleons.

I've also been reading about all the gorgeous hiking opportunities. I've found a couple of other travel blogs that have been to Sri Lanka... this one is a good one. How about hiring your own 83 year old hiking guide...?

We've never been "around" the world. In fact, if you look at our flight map of the past 8 years, there is a big gap...

There is a big gap between Europe and Singapore!

So if we were to do a trip like that, we would definitely fill that gap, either coming or going!

  1. Like you said if you are in the neighbourhood you might as well visit more then one country all while filling in your gap.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    1. First we have to figure if we can even go! Fingers crossed that life by then will start to resemble a bit of normalcy.

We definitely want to fill in that gap, it will be wonderful to be able to visit a couple of different countries along the way.

  2. You might look at the Philippine Islands. Friendly people, local language Tagalog but many speak English. We lived there for 2 years back when the US Navy was there - however husband was a civilian and we lived on the economy in Manila not on a Navy base. Wonderful experience and lots of places to travel. We did not go to the southern island where there is so much terrorism now. Just a thought. Enjoy your research and travels!

    1. The Philippines are definitely on our list, maybe not on this particular trip,(if we can even go) but certainly some time in the future. There is a lot of different countries to explore in that part of the world, so we wouldn't have a problem finding neat places to visit. :-)

  3. I am happy for you, if you are able to get there. I've thought about going there... or other countries, but am not yet able to travel from Canada (or even to travel from Detroit, even though I live in Windsor...across the river from Detroit, Michigan, USA. Hopefully, travel/airfare will be okay soon. My prayer continues. Blessings, Lynn (fellow blog writer of Life with Lynnie)

    1. The fall is still a long way off and so much can change between now and then but it doesn't cost us a penny to dream and explore different options. Hopefully life will start to get back to normal, or a least a new kind of normal, whatever that might end up being.

    1. We would have been 11 years old in 1972 so although it may have been in the news at the time, I doubt that we would have paid attention to the name change at that point in our lives. It is interesting how many countries have changed their names in our lifetime though. Lots of changes in the world over that time frame.

  5. Doesn't it seem strange to be riding out a pandemic on a ranch in the Texas panhandle, thinking about a trip to Sri Lanka?

    1. It does a bit but it never hurts to have a dream for the future and to be able to explore ideas and plan for an adventure for when things do finally open up to travel once again. :-)

  6. If you have access, try watching the TV series Good Karma Hospital. It was filmed in Sri Lanka and the countryside looks beautiful.

    1. I wrote down the name of the TV series so when we find some good free internet, Kevin can have a look to see if he can download it. Thanks!

Yep, the culture and the scenery are what is drawing us to wanting to visit there.

    1. So happy to hear that you thought it was amazing, now we want to go all the more. :-)

India, is another place that is definitely on our radar but it is a big country and we would probably want to do that in a trip all on it's own, but who know's, we may just end up there too.

Hopefully life will get back to a "new" normal by then.!
