Oh, and speaking of Texas State Parks, they are re-opening their day use areas as of Monday! Great news for those of us who like to get some exercise and fresh air.
Yesterday, we did the short drive from Johnson Park north of Abilene to the town of Hamlin. Along the way, we stopped at an Alon gas station in Hawley, where the price of gas was $1.26 USD per gallon ($0.47 CAD per liter).
But, we only put in twenty bucks worth! Why? Well because we are headed towards the town of Childress where the price is even cheaper at $1.03 per gallon ($0.38 CAD per liter)! So we want to arrive there as empty as possible.
It was kind of funny to put $20 in Sherman's tank and actually see some noticeable movement on the fuel gauge!

We had read of municipal camping area in the town of Hamlin at their sports park. I could only find one listing about it, where it had said that one night is free, and after that it is $13 a night. But when we arrived, we could not find a single sign or notice anywhere about pricing. So we pulled in and got parked up and figured we would just wait until somebody came by, although we doubted that anybody would.
There are maybe 14 sites here with 30 amp electric and water.
But we are the only ones here.

DeleteIt would be nice for more state parks to open for self-contained camping. As you are showing, social distancing is quite possible. We appreciate those municipal campgrounds and have used them frequently. They are miles ahead of a Walmart parking lot, but they are not generally destinations as such.

We have found some very nice little places here in Texas. Most little towns have a small campground, some are free, some are low cost and some not so much. When we find the free ones or the low cost ones we like to support them and the town, at least when things are normal.

ReplyDeleteWe have stayed at Cap Rock Canyon two years ago and really liked it but it looks like we will be missing it this year. The parks are only just starting to open up again and tomorrow is supposed to be the first day but only for day use and you have to book a reservation ahead of time online. Hopefully we can stop at Palo Duro for a hike though. We will try to see if we can get reservations for it. :-)

ReplyDeleteThere are lots of nice places to overnight at or stay for a day or two under normal circumstances. I know there were a few places that we would have loved to explore further but they will have to wait for another time when things are back to normal, if normal ever happens. ReplyDeleteI use our motorhome oven for all my cooking and baking. I don't normally have any issues with it. I find that I just have to keep a close eye on my baking, sometimes things cook a little quicker than normal and sometimes a little longer than normal but it is rare that I ever have a major failure, if ever! The only tip I can give, would be to check on the item a little sooner than the time allotted and then keep checking until it looks done. I also usually turn the item around in the oven part way through the cooking time. I think it just takes practice and patience to get a feel for your oven.
