We do have a plan...

Yesterday morning we received notification by email that Texas State Parks were all being closed to the public by 5:00pm that day.

We went out for our morning hike and discussed what that meant for us. We had planned on using some of the Texas State Parks while making our way north. The only time it looked like it was going to be a problem was the upcoming Easter long weekend.

And the upcoming Easter long weekend is likely why they made the decision to close. All Texas State Parks were showing mostly sold out.

Upon returning from our 6 mile (10 km) hike, we spoke to one of the park rangers who was going around site to site explaining that people already in the park with confirmed reservations were able to stay until their planned time here was up. I'm guessing there are only about a dozen sites here currently occupied.

We had planned on heading out this morning.

But surprisingly, the ranger said that if we needed an extra couple of nights to do some more planning, we were welcome to stay until Friday. They were not about to kick anybody out onto the street who was already in the park. We have friends who were at another state park and they also were able to complete their reservation. And yet other readers said they had to leave their particular park early. It seems that discretion rests with each individual park.

Nice people here at Guadalupe River State Park. This certainly gives us some flexibility to plan. And we do have a plan, but you'll have to see how it unfolds as we do it. Besides the state parks we had wanted to visit, we have a range of possible spots on our way north...we are pretty resourceful when it comes to finding places to overnight.

Lots of spring wildflowers out.
This one looks like it has a face!

Pretty poppies.

A few other people here getting some fresh air yesterday.

There is some kind of air base near here.
These guys are buzzing around all day.

Full moon as seen from Guadalupe River State Park.

  1. "I dreamed I saw the bombers flying shotgun in the sky turning into butterflies..."

One of your fellow Canadians (Sask, I'm pretty sure) wrote that.

    1. Yep, that was Joni Mitchell and she wrote the song Woodstock in 1970. She was born in Alberta but moved to Saskatchewan with her family.

  2. I got an email today from Texas State Parks informing me my annual parks pass expiration date is being extended at least 2 months, maybe more because of the virus closures. So, you are in good luck next year if you return to Texas from Mexico.

    1. Thank you very much for your kind offer Kay. We aren't planning on heading in that direction but should our plans change and we find ourselves headed that way we might just take you up on the offer. :-)

  6. That sure looks like a park somewhere in Canada. And those trees are pretty and unique. As usual your pictures are not only beautiful but informative and educational. Thank you and wishing you continued safe travels as you make your way slowly back to Canada.

    1. Or even in Mexico. :-)

The trees are Bald cypress and their sister species is the Montezuma cypress that we saw when we visited the Parque Nacional del Lago de Camécuaro the day before getting to Valle de Juarez last year with the beautiful clear blue water.

  8. Love following you guys.. my wife and I have a question probably best to ask elsewhere but, we were planning on going south for the 1st time next fall / winter. We know many snow birds had to come back early mainly because of insurance reasons. Do you have any suggestions for us as to what / how we should plan this out as we all see you guys are still south and not rushed back.. ???

    1. We simply made a choice not to. There was no reason for us to go back to Canada early.
