Stuck in Rock Springs, Wyoming

But, it shouldn't be for too long!

We left the Flaming Gorge Reservoir early. We didn't have any internet access from there, so we got up at 6:30am and drove into the town of Green River and found some unsecured free WiFi. We spent some time there, but we needed a laundromat and I wanted to do some driving before the wind picked up again so we continued on to Rock Springs.

Got parked up at the laundromat and I helped Ruth carry the clothes in. On my way back out, I saw what looked like a puddle underneath Sherman's front end.

Antifreeze.

I crawled underneath and had a quick look. Really hard to see where it was coming from, but it looked like maybe the lower rad hose where it attaches onto the water pump. I tightened up the clamp and dried things up as much as I could, then restarted the engine and crawled back underneath.

It was as I expected. The water pump is leaking.

On the bright side, better to find the problem here in town than out in the middle of nowhere!

I found a mechanic shop that has good reviews and we drove over to Rock Springs Auto Repair. They were quick to give me a price on doing the job, and ordered the parts right away.

Sherman, parked at Rock Springs Auto Repair.

I spoke to the mechanic who will be doing the job and we decided to change the fan clutch at the same time as the water pump because there would be no extra labor involved. The fan and fan clutch have to be removed anyhow to access the water pump. And we'll replace some belts at the same time.

I changed the fan clutch myself about 4 years ago and it worked well for about two years. But then it started engaging at high altitude and not disengaging until I got back down to lower altitude. Which isn't a problem except that it's loud and it affects fuel mileage. Anyhow, since it's going to be apart, now is the time to do it.

So, not an ideal start to the month of June! I expect that bill will be around $750 USD ($1,000 CAD).

Good people here at Rock Springs Auto Repair. They even offered us a car to use if we needed anything. We spent the night in their yard, and they are now working on Sherman. Hopefully it all goes smoothly.

  1. Sorry to hear. Better that it happened in town, but cheaper if it had happened in MX

  2. Hopefully that will be the last of your surprises for a few years down the road.

    1. We sure hope so! We thought this was going to be a cheap month, not so much now. :-(

  3. I lost a water pump on an older RV and the bolts all broke the tow bill was 600.00 but that got me home and I was able to drill out the bolts myself...
So the rest of the the job wasn't bad but the tow was bad..

    1. At least you were able to replace the water pump yourself, that would have helped you save some money. I remember our tow bill in Mexico back in the march 2018 was at least $800, luckily our insurance paid for some of it and the Mexican Caravan company paid for the rest.
