Fresh air and exercise

Saturday was a beautiful day here in Pierre, South Dakota. High of about 86F (30C) with blue sky and sunshine. Only downside was a bit of wind.

We took the bikes out in the morning and went across the causeway to the trails on the island. We planned on doing the other trails in town as well, but found it too windy. Maybe things would calm down later.

We were surprised that there was hardly anybody out.

Ruth and the great Missouri River.

There were a couple of boats out. This is a popular area for pontoon boats.

Dead end!

We made it back to Sherman and had some lunch, then went for a walk around the downtown and to the Capitol Building.

Ruth, with Arthur Mellette, the first Governor of South Dakota from 1889 to 1893.

There was nobody around!

We wandered around the property for a half an hour or so and ended up seeing only 4 other people the whole time! Everybody must be inside with their air conditioning while we were out enjoying a beautiful day.

The Fighting Horses.

Capitol Lake.

Capitol Lake (right beside the Capitol Building) is a man made lake with a water source that is a naturally heated underground spring. The lake maintains a constant 92F temperature so it never freezes. In winter, it is home to many waterfowl.

Flaming Fountain.

Honoring the six branches of the U.S. Armed Services.

The six branches are... Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard... and Space Force. I would not have been able to come up with Space Force!

The grounds around the Capitol Building area beautiful.

Walking back, we went by the local baseball stadium. They have a summer college level league that plays here, and there looked like there was some activity going on. I looked it up, and sure enough there was a game starting at 7:05pm. I would have loved to have gone! But I just can't bring myself to be that close to people just yet.

Back at the motorhome, we sat outside int he shade for a while and played some backgammon and did some reading. Ruth had gone back inside and I was sitting out by myself when a fellow approached and said "Are you Kevin?"

John and his wife Jade are full time RV'ers who read our blog. They also love traveling to other countries, so we had lots to talk about! Time passed quickly and before you know it we were still sitting out and it was almost 7:00pm!

John and Jade with Sherman.

We said goodbye, and hopefully we will meet up again some day.

After supper, the winds had calmed down and Ruth and I figured we had enough time for another bike ride before the sun went down.

For a small town, they've got a great bike path system.

Part of the Missouri River.

This is an oddly carved tree!

We had done 6 miles riding in the morning, then a 3 mile walk, then another 9 miles riding in the evening. What a good day out getting some fresh air and exercise.

Today, we will do a grocery shop early before the Walmart gets too busy, then some driving. It's supposed to be fairly calm today, but then winds picking up again tomorrow.

    1. We have been doing everything that we can on this trip north to avoid any crowds, and we really haven't been having an issue with that but we still have been able to fully enjoy being outside and seeing the sights.

We always love to meet up with any of our blog readers. :-)

  2. I am just wondering if you all parked on the island in the parking lot? How many days were you there and did anyone officials ever say anything to you while you were there? Looks like a great place to visit. We are heading that way in the next few weeks from Texas and would love to stay there as well.

    1. No, we didn't park up at the Island parking lot, apparently that is consider State property and and is "closed" at night. We were parked off to the left in the parking lot just before crossing the causeway. I believe you could also probably park on the causeway itself but we liked where we were because we could easily set up our chairs in the shade of the trees in the park. We didn't have any issues at all with parking there and we were there for two nights.

    1. That has been what we have been doing for the last three months and it hasn't been difficult at all. :-)

    1. We actually could have spent another day here but we didn't want to push our luck with our free parking spot in one of the main parks. There were all kinds of bike paths both on La Framboise Island and all down the river to Farm Island. It was a really pretty area, and one that not many people stop in for a visit at.

    1. It was a great day! It would have been nice to have had the tour of the Capitol Building but it wasn't open for tours on the weekend and even if it was we probably wouldn't have done it anyways, just because we are doing out best to avoid people and crowds.
