In February of 2016 we were just outside of Guanajuato, Mexico waiting for the Mexico RV caravan to show up. The day before they did, we went for a hike in the hills opposite the RV park.
What started out as a simple hike in the hills became a marathon!
We had a fairly late 11:00am start.
But then, we weren't planning on being gone very long!
A bit of a view.
We ended up high above the city of Guanajuato.
But we couldn't seem to find a route to take us into the city. The cliffs were too steep and we ended up walking to another village, and then all the way back to Guanajuato where we found a bus to take us back to the trailer park.
By the time we arrived back, it was after 6:00pm. We had done 25 kms (15.5 miles)!
In April of that same year, we did a fantastic hike in spectacular Bryce Canyon. It wasn't exceptionally long, or exceptionally difficult, but the scenery is just so worthwhile...
Beautiful scenery!
We spent much of the winter of 2016-2017 in Europe. But we didn't do a lot of hiking until we got to Italy. Our first stay was in Bergamo in the northern part near the border with Switzerland. The hike we did at that time was okay, but nothing special until we got to the top. As we crested the ridge on the top of the hill, we had the most spectacular view looking north towards Switzerland...
The other worthwhile hike we did in Italy was the popular one at Cinque Terre National Park. Unfortunately we didn't have great weather that day, but the hike itself is still very scenic.
We did 19 kms (12 miles) that day!
In July and August of 2018, we were in northern Canada's Yukon Territory. We did a lot of hiking on that trip, but the best excursion was on the Nares Mountain Trail near Carcross.
It didn't take long to start to get a view.
It was a steep climb!
Ruth, taking a break!
Fantastic views.
Heading back down.
And more recently, in October 2019 we were in Peru, where we did quite a lot of high altitude hiking, including one short hike that took us to the highest altitude we have ever been without the assistance of an airplane... 16,400'.
But the most memorable hike we did in Peru was the Laguna Ahuac Trail. It was a full day hike with an elevation gain of 1150 meters (3,800') in 6.1 kms (3.8 miles) one way. But more importantly, the hike started at 11,200'!
Heading up.
One foot in front of the other.
Enjoying the view.
Made it to the top!
That hike was not the most fantastic from a scenery point of view, but it was definitely the toughest day hike we have ever done.
And as of tomorrow... we can get back outside and do some more of this kind of thing!

Definitely lots of memories. Tomorrow we'll be reading about new adventures.

It's about time.
Yes, we definitely have lots of great memories.
DeleteI don't think today's post will have much in the way of fun new adventures but at least it will have some new pictures. :-)
You never know what you'll find. Asking locals sometimes works and other times what they consider normal or passe for a visitor can become a real find. Great pics.
ReplyDeleteYes we agree, asking locals is a great way to find hidden little gems and also with us we might see a back road somewhere and just start following it and see where it leads us, that is how we ended up at the top of the mountain in Guanajuato. :-)
DeleteI am not a hiker, so always enjoy reading your posts and pictures. .....they rarely disappoint. Those colorful cliffs at Bryce Canyon are hard to beat anywhere in the world! Don’t you think so? Thanks again for a wonderful way to see the world through your camera Kevin!
ReplyDeleteThank you Lynnette we are glad that you love to read about our hikes and see our pictures without ever having to do the hike yourself.
DeleteYes, Bryce Canyon is definitely a gorgeous and interesting place to visit. There are other places in the world, and we have been to a few of them but Bryce Canyon has the most hoodoos and is the most popular in the world.
