Yesterday we sorted through what is going with Sherman and what is staying. Of course we now have all of our "stuff" to get rid of. It almost feels like when we sold the house back in 2007.
Some of the stuff is worth money, so I will advertise on FB marketplace and Kijiji and get rid of it. Not that easy being out here 45 minutes from the city. Most people won't want to drive this far to pick up what might be a $25 item.
I was doing some more research on this German Residence Permit that we want to get. It actually looks fairly easy. You have to register a German address, provide proof of suitable finances, and proof of private health insurance. Then go for an interview which is usually (but not always) done in German, but you are allowed to bring a translator with you. Provided you follow the guidelines, most permits are approved.
I was reading that 56% of people in Germany speak English as well.
The permit is issued for a year, but is renewable annually provided your circumstances haven't changed.
Having this permit would allow us to bypass the Schengen Visa rules that only allow us three months at a time in most of the European Union countries. That way, we can buy a motorhome in Germany and tour Europe at our leisure for a couple of years without having to leave the European Union every three months.

It was a big day but we also know that it was the right time and the right decision for us. I am sure he will be well looked after.
DeleteWhen the time comes we will see how the actual process goes. It is easy enough to read about it, putting in to the test might be a whole other story.

Delete*sigh* I remember the very last time I drove our Class A. I almost turned back, but we were living in Europe and paying to store it. So it had to go. Good luck with the residence permit. It'll be interesting.
ReplyDeleteYep, sometimes it is difficult to let things go when they have given you such amazing memories but like you, it just didn't make sense to keep him any longer.
DeleteI don't think we will actually apply for the German Residence Permit until next year, it will all depend on what we end up planning to do this fall and winter first but we do want to get all our ducks in a row first. Yes, we are sure it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

ReplyDeleteYes, I did make it and it was delicious even if I say so myself. There are very few things that I ever buy, I cook/bake almost everything from scratch, that way I know what ingredients are in it. :-)

I'm wondering about how things will work for you : will your Canadian health insurance be 'suspended' during those two years? And if so, I suppose you have to replace it with a private health insurance, which must be pretty costly, no? Thanks!

DeleteNo, we will lose our Canadian health insurance as Saskatchewan only has a one year "suspended absence" that is allowed unless it is for the purpose of employment. Having said that we only have to be back in the province for three months to have make it valid again. So, yes we will have to buy private health insurance while we are over there as it is also one of the conditions for the German Residence Permit, that you show proof of health insurance. The cost shouldn't be too bad, Kevin had found a company that charged reasonable prices when we were in Australia last summer, providing we don't go into USA with it, if we were to want the States included it would cost quite a bit more.
