We had been hoping to visit England

Ruth's parents came to Canada from England back in the late 1950's so she still has relatives there and we like to visit every few years. But the last time we were in England was in July of 2012!

So we really were due for a visit, which is why we originally booked our upcoming flight to London. The price was cheap, and when we booked it back in June we figured that maybe they would have lifted the quarantine for arrivals from Canada by now. Of course that hasn't happened which is why we are now carrying on to Berlin.

We will still have more than 24 hours in London... but it won't be much of a visit because we will be stuck in Gatwick airport!

It looks like we will finally be able to use some of the lounge passes that came with our Scotiabank Passport Infinite Visa card. We get six passes per year and we weren't able to use any of them last year so we are looking forward to that.

The premium lounge in Gatwick airport is open from 5am to 9pm and has a maximum three hour stay so we will have to time our visit so that we can eat as soon as we get in there, and eat again just before we leave. We get free table service with food and alcohol included, so we won't have to buy as much food in the airport itself.

And, we will waste time walking the terminal and people watching and reading. We've got a couple of movies we can watch on the laptop. We find that time passes quickly in an airport, although this will certainly be one of our longer layovers!

Today, we are headed into the city for one last visit with Ruth's dad.

  1. I remember seeing some Comfortable seating in the airport for lounging and sleeping. I hope it's still there.

    1. We remember seeing some as well but it will be interesting to see if they still have it available or if they have them cordoned off do to COVID. We are hoping that they are still in use too! :-)

    1. Thank you Esther! Hopefully we will be able to do some exploring, things are changing over in Europe even as I type. We need to be aware of any new rules and regulations that they put in place as we travel.

    1. Thanks Doug, and yes we are aware of that website. I think Kevin has actually posted that link in our blog posts before, from when we have had a long stopover in one of the many airports that we have traveled through.

  6. We've been watching the US southern border restrictions with bated breath -- we've got plane tickets and hotel reservations for Puerto Vallarta in early December. But if the border still isn't open, we're stuck...

Had hoped to do some traveling in the East Coast, as well. It's faster to go via Canada. But again...

    1. You are able to fly down to Mexico without any issues and we have heard that people haven't had issues driving across the US/Mexican border either and there is no quarantine down there.
