Out for a hike... and today is moving day!

Tuesday, we relaxed for the morning and then drove the short distance into the national park on the other side of where we are staying. We had done a short section of the trail last time we were there, and we wanted to do some more.

It's actually about an 18 km (11 mile) hike one way, but you have to either have someone meet you on the other side, or take a Dolums (local minibus) back home. It would have been an all day event and you would have to get an earlier start than we did. Still, we managed to do an in and out hike of 12.2 kms (7.5 miles) so we were happy with that.

And heading in, it was a nice gradual incline. Just enough to get the heart pumping, but not to the point of where you need to rest. We climbed 500 meters (1,640') in 6.1 kms (3.8 miles).

Nice spider web... no spider to be seen!

That's a big rock!

Scenery along the way.

Beautiful scenery.

Unfortunately there has been an odd haze in the air every day that we've been here. It seems like pollution smog, but the nearest large city of Izmir is 160 kms (100 miles) away.

Clear blue sky, yet you can barely make out the sea.

Looking down on the coast.

One of the beaches.

Heading back down hill.

It was a nice hike and we enjoyed it. Didn't see a single other person the whole way!

I've been neglecting adding up our daily walking here in Turkey.

Sunday 3.5 kms (2.2 miles)

Monday 6.5 kms (4.0 miles)

Tuesday 12.2 kms (7.5 miles)

We have now walked a total distance of 254.4 kms (157.7 miles) in Turkey.

Today, we are moving on to the seaside town of Yalikavak, just north of Bodrum for a three night stay.

  1. Knowing nothing about Turkey, you have me googling all these locations! So all the islands off the coast....they all belong to Greece? Bet those would be fun to see.

    1. We are giving you a geography lessons as well as history lessons, lol.

Yes, pretty much all the islands off the coast of Turkey are Greek Islands. They would be fun to see but we have to be careful with how much time we spend in Europe because of the Schengen visa and we know that we want to be in Germany for mid March. So we are basically trying to stay away from Europe for the time being. Once we have the motorhome and the paperwork sorted out, then we can visit Greece sometime over the course of our two years or so of travel in Europe. The other thing is that many of the ferries aren't or weren't traveling from Turkey to Greece because they are having issues between themselves once again.

  2. Are there wolves or bears, anything like that, in Turkey?

    1. I know there are big boars. We visited a beach in the Nat. Park that K&R posted about the other day with our 11 month old back in 2012. Our picnic was interrupted by a large pack of wild pigs that were BIG and not too concerned by our presence. I know they were probably harmless, but it was a bit disconcerting.

    2. Yes, they have wolves and bears plus lynx and caracal which looks similar to a lynx. There aren't many wolves overall and the population of them is dwindling, seeing that Canada is fairly abundant with wolves and we have never seen one in the wild the chances of us coming across one in the wild here are very slim. The bears are located in and around a National Park further inland and up in the mountains, we won't be headed there on this trip. The wild cats are around but again, they are pretty elusive that we most likely won't come across any. As AZC mentioned though, there are wild boar/javelinas around and yes, they are supposed to have been abundant in the National Park area that we were in but we never saw any, we saw evidence of them, where they have dug up the ground looking for food but we didn't see any. They are supposed to be very popular down around the beaches, just like AZC had encountered.

Anyways, we aren't worried about the wildlife, we have hiked in places where bears, cougars, leopards and lions have lived and as long as you are careful and aware of your surroundings and what you should do if you encounter an wild animal you should be good. The odds are pretty low, in coming in contact with any of these animals.

  3. Nice that you were able to get at least part of the trail in for your hike.

    1. We knew from the start that we weren't going to do the whole trail so we were very happy with doing a good portion of it, at least we got up to a nice view point. It was still a pretty hike and it was nice to be out there and away from people.

    1. Yes, a new town but we have set our expectations low because this area that we are headed to is a very touristy area. Hopefully we can wander around a bit and maybe even get in another hike while we are there. The weather isn't looking good for the next few days!
