It occurred to me that we are going to be 60 soon

An interesting thing happened the other day.

I looked in the mirror, and actually saw myself.

I didn't say anything to Ruth, but the funny thing was, a few hours later Ruth said she had the same experience!

Of course it was because we were no longer wearing glasses, and the person we saw in the mirror was actually in focus. Those of you who wear glasses may never experience seeing your face clearly without having those glasses on.

I don't think I looked older, really... just different in some way. Maybe it's because my hair is longer than it's been in years, and I need a haircut!

Ruth thought she had more wrinkles. Which kind of makes sense. It occurred to me that we are going to be 60 soon.

And that's only five years away from being an official senior citizen.

When we first set out over 13 years ago on this different lifestyle we were almost 46 years old. We were certainly among the younger crowd of those out RV'ing full time, and many of the people reading this blog were older than us. I remember when we would go out and do some long hikes or something else that many would have thought to have required "youth", and we would get comments like "oh yeah, but you are still young". And these comments would be coming from someone who was probably 60 at the time.

And here we are at 59 years old about to attempt to climb Kilimanjaro! I'm sure some of you who are in your 70's and 80's are thinking "oh yeah, but you are still young"...lol.

Look Ma... no glasses!

I don't think I feel any older than I did at 45. And I think that's the whole key. If you keep yourself in shape, I don't see why we can't be doing these things for quite a few more years yet.

I have an uncle who is going to be 76 soon, and he is still very active and fit, doing 10 km hikes regularly, and cross country skiing and snowshoeing and cycling trips and canoe and kayaking. He is kind of my role model for this kind of thing.

We are into our 14th year of doing this, and with any luck at all we should have at least another 20 years to go. I'm very excited about that. I think our 60's are going to be our best years!

Weekend lockdown is over once again. Not the greatest weather though... supposed to be overcast all day, although it's not supposed to rain. We're going to go for a drive on the coast east of Antalya for a change of scenery.

    1. It is funny how those years seem to creep up on you while you aren't noticing! ;-)

  4. Your right we don't think our age but when we look in the mirror we sometimes wonder who is that. Having kept yourselves fit is giving you a big advantage over many.

    1. We like to think it does. We will continue on staying fit for as long as we can. We love giving ourselves challenges like these up coming hikes. :-)

  5. I'm still hiking and active at 76 years old. My knees took a hit in my 40's skiing so it's put a damper on running. My grandma was very fit into her late 80's riding horses, walking long distances...so I'm counting on that gene. You both look young and your life style is awesome.

  6. Kevin, I love your hair. Don't get a haircut. You look so good and handsome. Ruth looks always great.

    1. Renate, I think you are the only one who doesn't think he should get a haircut, lol! He really needs one and we will be looking after that today and I am getting one too.

    2. I have now seen the photo with Kevin after the haircut. I must admit he looks better with short hair. It is an excellent cut. And your hairdo as well. Great photo of both of you.

    3. Thanks Renate, and yes Kevin looks much better with his hair shorter. :-)

  7. I agree that you could use a haircut, Kevin...looking a little poofy on top! ;-) Ruth, you look fantastic, but I empathize on the wrinkles. I'll be 60 in April, which I can hardly believe. I feel like my wrinkles quadrupled just in the last five years. Oh well, here's to natural and healthy aging, right?! And yes, I am now seeing ads on your site! ;-)

    1. Yep, he definitely needs a cut but he hates getting someone other than me to do it. I think this will be the third time since we met that someone else has cut his hair, lol,

I always knew the wrinkles have been there over the last number of years but when you wear glasses they help to hid them behind the frames, now I don't have the glasses to hide behind. Yes, it all part of the aging process and unless you want to spend lots of money, you can't really stop it. I will wear those wrinkles proudly. :-)

You still have time to work on it, start off slowly, just don't give up. :-)

  9. I can't believe it's 13 yrs we met you about the time you started out. We follow every blog. I'm really glad the eye surgery went well. It's nice not having to wear glasses all the time. Have fun, stay safe.

    1. Yep, 12 1/2 years ago, I just checked. Hard to believe how fast time flies!

We are glad not to have to wear glasses either although the doctor did give us prescriptions today for glasses. We just need to have them for certain circumstances when they are really needed otherwise the majority of our day to day activities are totally fine without them. :-)

  10. Just curious why you are not able to cut Kevin's hair?
I've always loved the quote attributed to the late, great Satchel Paige: "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?" Somedays, 40. Somedays, 80.

    1. I don't carry around my haircutting scissors or the hair clippers with me and I wasn't about to buy them, it would cost way more then the price of a hair cut. I will buy some when we have our new motorhome in Europe because then we just carry them around in the vehicle.

That saying is very true! Kevin and I often see really old people in some countries, where we laughingly say they don't even know how old they are because in some of the countries we travel in, good records weren't always kept, they may know the day they were born but not always the year.

  11. Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. Safe travels to you!

  12. Bah hambug! Age is just a number.....like they say...60 is the new 40......you guys have a lot of traveling and fun years ahead of you! Safe travels.

    1. You are totally right, and I have said the same thing, age is only a number!

When I have a birthday and someone asks me what it is like to feel a year older, I always rely that I am only a day older than I was yesterday. :-)

Yep, we think we have lots of traveling years in front of us yet!
