Waterfalls around Antalya, Turkey

It was looking like another decent day yesterday with a forecast high of 20C (68F) and cloudy with sunny breaks. So we set off to do some more exploring.

There are several waterfalls in the area of Antalya, so we planned a route to include two of the more popular ones. The first one is within the city limits, but not the downtown area. It's called Upper Duden Waterfalls. We had been to the Lower Duden Waterfalls a couple of weeks ago.

They have a big parking area, but it's pay parking. There was hardly anybody around, so it was easy to find a free spot nearby. Then we paid the 5 lira ($0.87 CAD, $0.69 USD) entrance fee. Once again, we notice that the locals tend to come out in droves after the noon hour, so it is best to try to visit attractions in the morning.

It's a really pretty area.

It's very developed, but they've done a good job.

This is actually where the river emerges from the ground. It kind of reminded us of the Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park in the city of Uruapan, Mexico, although on a smaller scale. The river then flows to a couple of waterfalls, and then eventually into the ocean. However here in Turkey, this river only flows for about 10 kms (6 miles) before it hits the ocean.

There are a lot of small caves along the side of the small canyon.

There's not really that much water flowing over the falls.

Most of the water comes from underground.

They've done a pretty good job building a walkway that goes through the caves in behind the waterfalls. It's actually really neat!

Heading in behind the falls.

There are lots of picnic tables spread about.

Because most city dwellers live in apartments and don't have their own "backyard" as such, the city parks and areas like this are very popular with people. They bring their lawn chairs and picnic and I would expect that on a normal nice weekend, a place like this would be packed.

From there, we drove another 20 kms (13 miles) or so to another waterfall.

The Kursunlu Park and Waterfalls is slightly outside the city, and this park is quite a bit bigger than the first one. There are a few easy but interesting trails that follow the river and we enjoyed doing a 2.5 km (1.5 mile) hike along the shore.

This park had a 9 lira ($1.60 CAD, $1.25 USD) per adult entrance fee.

The Kursunlu Waterfalls.

Given the amount of rain we've had recently, we kind of expected there to be more water coming over the falls. And looking at photos on the internet, it does appear that sometimes there is more water than others. I guess they're just not quite there yet!

Hey look... no glasses!

But despite the fact that there wasn't much water, it's still a really pretty area.

Interesting hiking trail.

Smaller waterfalls further down.

We enjoyed our day out at the waterfalls!

Looks like another nice day today, so we are taking advantage of that and heading out to do some more sightseeing!

  3. Wow! What a lovely day trip and it’s close to the city! My kind of day trip! Lol! Thanks for sharing. This is one of the doable walks that Paul and I can manage if and when we ever make it there. You guys look so much younger without your cumbersome glasses! And the journey continues! Stay safe.
