Dentist update, and a walk around Berat

So, I went to my third dental appointment yesterday at noon. I was probably only in the chair for a half an hour or so. He was hoping to be able to finish the job yesterday, but one of the products he used has to set for a minimum of 24 hours, so I now have a fourth appointment, this final one is for Tuesday at noon.

I still can't believe the whole thing is only costing 5,000 lek. ($60 CAD, $48 USD, €40). He has a price list up on the wall, and of course it's all in Albanian, but the cheapest item on the list is 500 lek... 1/10th of what I am paying for my procedure.

I asked him if we could take a photo...

Me, with Dr. Qalliu.

So it's a good thing we booked a full week extra here. I still haven't looked into where we are going next, and we have to be out of here on Wednesday. I had better get on that this evening.

Yesterday afternoon we went for a walk on the other side of the river.

Pedestrian bridge.

Gorica.

The main road leading into Berat.

Castle on the hill.

The Berat River Side Camping Park.

We walked over to the local campground to see if there was anybody there. Only one older motorhome, but of course it's not really the season here yet. Looked like they were doing some work getting thins ready though.

Ruth standing on the Velabisht Bridge, built in 1764, and renovated in 2015.

Berat Castle up on the hill.

Berat.

We walked back through some of the back alleys in old town Gorica...

Another bunker.

Here's a fixer-upper for sale.

The Albanian word for "For Sale" is Shitet. At first, we thought it was foul language graffiti! But then we started seeing the same word on cars with a phone number.

The fancy Hotel Colombo.

Today, we have something special planned for you. We are going river rafting in the spectacular Osum Canyon! Looking forward to showing you the photos tomorrow.

  1. That's a very inexpensive dental repair and it seems this young Dentist is taking his time to be certain he is doing it right.
    Lots of beautiful scenery.

    1. Yes, it is a very inexpensive repair. Kevin is very happy with the dentist and his work and the fact that he explains what he is doing as we works on Kevin's tooth or lack of it.

  3. That is an amazing price for dental work. I paid the equivalent of $40 US for a cleaning in Mexico, but that was in Playa del Carmen, with an English-speaking dentist that had a lot of expat patients. Still less than the US, though.

    1. Kevin still can't believe how inexpensive it was. He said the dentist was great, never rushed and explained everything he was doing to Kevin's tooth and why.

You were definitely paying the gringo price for your cleaning in Playa del Carmen, our dentist in Valle de Bravo charges less than $20 USD, but as you said it is still way less that what it would have cost you in the US. :-)

  4. Good looking dentist and a great price! Berat so far really looks pretty ...even prettier than Tirana. Maybe because it has that “old” charm. Glad that it’s a UNESCO site.

    1. Definitely a great price!

Berat is so much prettier than Tirana but it is also a lot smaller of a place and yes, it had that "old world" charm to it. I am sure we will be back here again some day. :-)

  5. The campground sign was in English! Are many of the street signs in English?

    1. Yes, it was but that is because the park attracts people from Europe where there are so many different languages but English is generally one language that the majority of travelers can speak even if they aren't fluent at it. Overall I would say that no, the majority of street signs are not in English. Many of the young people can speak English so normally you won't have too much of an issue with the language but if you stay in places away from tourist areas then English isn't so common. Learning at least the basics of the Albanian language is helpful and also respectful, plus they appreciate the effort.
