Pogradec Beach and Albania's Drilon National Park

On Friday, we walked almost the full length of the waterfront here in Pogradec, all the way to Drilon National Park. It was about 5 kms (3 miles) each way. In fact, only 2 kms further and we would have been at the North Macedonia border crossing.

They're doing a lot of spring clean up work on the beachfront. This is a busy area on hot summer weekends, so starting about a month from now the lakeside beach will be packed.

But right now, things are still pretty quiet...

Beach at Pogradec, Albania.

This beach gets packed on hot summer weekends.

Me, loading up a giant slingshot!

Old Communist era playground equipment.

Lake Ohrid.

Wisteria flowers.

At Drilon National Park, there were two tour buses in the parking lot, but as we were entering there were loads of school kids just leaving. So our timing was pretty good. It's a really small park that was made into a park because of the natural spring water . This was a private retreat for Communist dictator Enver Hoxha and he had a villa located here.

It's such a small park. It reminded us of Mexico's Camecuaro National Park, but without the big cypress trees.

Mommy swan and her family.

Albania has so much natural spring water.

They take people for 15 minute rowboat rides.
We didn't really see the point.

It's a pretty park.

It's a really pretty park. But there are two restaurants on site, and one of them is really big with a big patio overlooking the small lake above. I forgot to get a photo of it. And there are literally no benches in the park, so there is nowhere to sit down unless you go to one of the restaurants. It's even tough to sit on the grass because there are so many ducks and geese.

And peacocks!

This duck didn't like the peacock getting so close.

Amazing feathers!

And then of course the female doesn't even look like the same species.

Beach in front of the park.

The mountains of North Macedonia.

A decorated bunker.

We had done 10 kms (6.2 miles), but it was all flat so pretty easy walking.

Strawberries, eggs, and walnuts.

We picked up some fruits and vegetables and eggs. The eggs can be bought in egg containers, usually in either 10 or 15 eggs per container. But they are expensive to buy that way. In many of the smaller shops, it's much cheaper to buy them out of a big basket, or a bin like the one in the photo above. Like in most countries around the world, the eggs are not refrigerated in Albania.

Not much planned for today. Calling for a high of only 14C (58F) and showers. We will get out for a walk at some point either way though.

  1. Female peacocks remind me of our Ottawa Valley wild turkeys. Our neighbour used to raise them. Enough to wake the dead!

    1. We find that most countries that we have visited have a change in geography/environments. One of the many reasons that we love to spend lots of time in each country that we visit, it gives us more time to explore the different regions. :-)
