Hopefully it will be a quick fix, but I'm not betting on it.

A bit of a frustrating day yesterday.

We left our free overnight spot early Monday morning. We had forgotten that on Sundays the shops are almost all closed, and we had run out of milk so figured we would go into the nearest town that also had a motorhome service point where we could empty our toilet tank.

That turned out to be the town of  Vreden which was in the wrong direction to where we had wanted to be going, but it was only about 12 kms (7 miles) out of our way.

We got there and found the Aldi store and did some early morning grocery shopping. From there, we went to the motorhome dump station which happened to be located at a sports center where they had a parking spot where we figured we would relax and have our morning tea and hot chocolate.

But Ruth went to open the sliding kitchen pantry door, and it wouldn't open. This is the door that wouldn't close properly and the dealer service had repaired as part of our minor warranty problems last Friday.

Our sliding kitchen pantry door.

This is as far as it will open.

There is something binding at the top right corner. But where it's binding is not at all accessible, so you can't readily see what it is.

The problem is that we have a lot of food in the pantry, and it's the main storage area for anything to do with cooking. It's also where the makings for tea and hot chocolate are kept, so we were out of luck in that department.

We tried everything to get the door to open, but it just won't.

So we made the decision to drive back to the dealer because we were only about an hour away.

Back at the dealer, we found out that the service department is closed on Mondays. But David, the guy we had dealt with last Friday would be in Tuesday morning.

I had nothing else to do, and I have a small basic hand tool kit, so decided to see if I could fix it myself. I took apart part of the side cabinet to see if I could access it, but when it looked like I might be getting in over my head, and still didn't have access, I put it back together.

I did come to the conclusion that it's not going to be an easy fix, even for the pros.

We were feeling a little frustrated yesterday... it seems like we've been waiting forever to get on the road with Max, and then this comes up.

But by the end of the day, we were fine... it's just another bump on the road, and even with a brand new rig, things are bound to happen.

Hopefully it will be a quick fix, but I'm not betting on it.

And in Canada...

  1. Hate to say it but we've had that type of sliding door thing before and they are prone to go wrong. Theoretically great, in practice not especially in a moving vehicle.

    1. This one is designed differently and can't have the typical problem that past designs have had. Time will tell, but I believe this is an installation problem, not a design problem.

  2. Here in America (Missouri) I I love our Aldi’s. Hope you checked out their reasonably price liquor department,

    1. We have been to Aldi's in the US over the years and they are much the same here. Yes, we have checked out their reasonably priced liquor department, in fact Kevin can pick up a decent tasting 500 ml can of beer for €0.54 ($0.80 CAD, $.064 USD), so he is a happy camper. :-)

  3. What did the dealer say was the problem when they fixed it the first time? Did they say it was an installation problem? Good luck having the sliding pantry door fixed. Maybe they will take out the whole pantry and reinstall a new one.

    1. There was a little strip of wood that covers where the big panels meet behind the sliding roller door that was sticking out a little too much and the door was catching on it. David was able to put a small screw in the piece of wood from inside our clothes closet right near the edge of the sliding door that was enough to push that piece of wood flush with the wall so the door didn't catch on it anymore. They didn't say anything about it, it was a pretty minor detail.

Kevin will be explaining the issue that we had with the sliding roller door in today's post.

    1. Lol, yep unless it was to go bad but luckily there was nothing there that would spoil.

  5. In our experience there are always little glitches when starting out with something new. We pick up our new little Escape trailer on the 12th and plan to stay close to home for a couple of weeks to give us time to see if everything is fine. Besides, BC is already starting to burn up so we may not be able to head north right away anyway. 🥲

    1. This is the first time that we have had a new RV and of course we were hoping everything would go smoothly but we also figured that there might be the odd thing or two that needed attention. If this was the worse that it gets then we are fine with that, we have certainly heard some horror stories of people with new units. It will be an expensive lesson when it is all fixed up properly again but at least we know that it was our problem and not a problem with the unit itself.

Good luck with your new unit, hopefully you also won't have any major issues with it. We hope that you guys see some cooler temperatures and some rain soon. We were out in British Columbia in August/September 2018 when the fires were really bad so we know what you mean.

    1. We got the problem solved for the moment but it won't be fixed properly until we return in October. We are on the road again. :-)
