Almost at Austria

We did another 300 km (180 mile) drive yesterday. I know, that's not our normal style, but we are catching up to our friends Glen and Steve who are heading in the same direction as us, but they are ahead of our schedule. They have purposely slowed down a bit so that we can catch up.

But yesterday, we took the back roads the whole way. Yes, it's slower going and probably uses a bit mre fuel. But it's so much more scenic and interesting.

We left the village of Messel at about 10:00am.

Typical town buildings.

Scenery along the way.

There has to be a castle up there!

Ruth took a video of us driving through the town of Schwabhausen...

Some more interesting architecture.

Scenery along the way.

We stopped at the village of Krautheim which was about the half way point, and about the time we were ready for some lunch. Coincidentally, there was a castle in the village and we were due to stretch our legs so we hiked up to the castle. Of course a castle is almost always at the top of a hill, so we would get some exercise at the same time. We ended up doing about 2.5 kms (1.5 miles).

Temperature was warm enough... a high of about 19C (66F), but it was overcast all day and it spit with rain a few times.

Heading up to the castle.
Ruth bought a new raincoat while we were in Ottawa!

Almost at the top.

Ohhh... this is cool.

A house on top of a bridge.

At Krautheim Castle.

Krautheim Castle. Built between 1239 to 1243.
Unfortunately it closed for the season on September 30th.

Looking down on the town of Krautheim.

Old castle walls.

The dungeon?

We went for a walk that led through this orchard.

Ruth picked an apple. It was pretty good!

View from our hike.

Max, parked in the town of Krautheim.
You can see the castle above.

More scenery.

Big cow at a dairy.

Yet another castle of some kind.

We found a small parking lot for some trails and decided it would do for an overnight stop. Turned out to be quiet as can be, and we both slept well.

We've driven about 600 kms (372 miles) over the past two days. That's not like us, but we will have time to relax in Austria and Slovenia. Looking forward to meeting up with our friends Glen and Steve this afternoon!

Our approximate route the last two days.

  3. You came very close to Zaisersweiher, a village southwest of Heilbronn. That's where my grandfather was from before he came to the US. Brings back a lot of memories to see the villages you drove through. I lived in Germany for a time in 1972 when I was a teenager. Love those little picture postcard villages on the back roads.

    1. I am sure we will be back this way in the future and actually even closer to Zaiserseiher, so who knows we might just stop by there at some point. Glad that we could bring back some good memories for you. We are really loving the scenery from the back roads in this part of Germanym it so much nicer than driving on the autobahn.

    1. We also wondered where all the people were as we were driving through the small town. It was just before 11am on a Sunday morning and it was cool and overcast so maybe everyone was just hanging out inside their houses!
