Lots of good free camping spots

Saturday was a beautiful day. Sunshine, with a high around 20C (68F). Above average for this area at this time of year. So we got the bikes off and went for a bike ride.

First we went south along the beach road as far as we could go. Lots of good free wild camping (boondocking) spots. Only one problem though. Mosquitoes! There are a lot of marshy areas, and that usually means bugs. Bugs and I don't get along!

In fact, even where we are parked at the restaurant, we get some mosquitoes as soon as the sun sets. None during the day though, so that's good.

Out for a bike ride.

Fishing.

Lezhë Castle in the distance.

We made it to the end of the road and there were a lot of parked cars. We locked up the bikes and went for a walk on a trail that led to an old bridge where a bunch of men were fishing.

Fishing.

The water isn't very deep.

We came across a crab graveyard.
Strange.

Then we rode back the other way, past the town itself, and into a weird military zone. There was a gate that was half open, and a bunch of signs saying it was a military zone, and no entrance. But there were also signs saying that there were hotels and beach clubs and camping further on. Strange. There was a guard booth, but we just rode right on through and nobody stopped us.

And it was a military zone. Some of it was in pretty rough shape, but there were still a couple of buildings being used, and we even saw some guys in uniform. Only took one photo going through there...

Two old navy ships.

This is a campground!

No thanks.

The most popular app for campsites in Europe is park4night. It's always interesting reading some of the reviews when we're searching for an overnight spot. This place does not get good reviews.

A different bunker!

This section of beach is quite nice.

Again, quite a lot of new construction, and some older beach clubs that are falling apart. So much of Albania reminds us of Mexico, and perhaps that's one of the reasons we like Albania so much. Now, if only we could find a place that makes enchiladas de pollo con tortillas de maiz!

We ended up doing 22 kms (13.6 miles) so not bad. Felt good to get the bikes out again.

Calling for overcast and showers for much of today, so we're going to head to a highway truck stop that apparently has free motorhome hookups where we can sit out the weather and recharge our batteries. We've been doing pretty good with our batteries and solar panels, but the sun doesn't go very high into the sky at this time of year, and of course it gets dark so early.

And in Canada...

  1. Curious about instrumentation for your solar system. Are you able to accurately determine battery charge level so as to protect your batteries from harmful levels of discharge?
