Great views above Leonidio, Greece

Sorry to go on about the weather, but that's kind of what is affecting our travels right now. Wednesday was about what they said it would be... chilly and windy and not much in the way of sun. Fortunately the rain was finished and we managed to get out for a couple of hours and do some hiking.

The area around the town of Leonidio isn't really a big tourist area, except for the fact that it's popular with rock climbers. The town is surrounded by some sheer cliff faces, and apparently there are something like 1,400 different climbing routes mapped out if you're into that kind of thing.

We aren't into the climbing thing, but you have to use hiking trails in order to get to the rock climbing areas.

Along the way, we wanted to head up to these ancient towers.

That's where we're headed!

Heading uphill.

Starting to get some views.

Looking out to sea.
Notice there is a lot of farming in the valley down below.

Looking inland towards the town of Leonidio.

We sat and had some lunch at this gorgeous viewpoint.

Me, doing some rock climbing!

No, I didn't go any higher than this!

From there, we hiked back down and walked into town. It's actually a nice little town and we really liked it. The kind of place we would live if we moved to Greece. Speaking of which, overall we haven't been overly impressed with Greece, however we do like this southern area of the Peloponnese Peninsula. It's still not a country that we would move to though. In our opinion it's too expensive for the benefits that you would get by moving here. We would still choose Spain or Portugal, or even Albania over Greece. But that's just us.

Wandering around town.

During spring, there is a river that runs through town.
It's totally dried up at this time of year, even with the recent rains.

The main drag is a little narrow for motorhomes!

Ruth tries to say hello to every animal we meet!

In the old town area.

We walked back to Max along the dried up riverbed. As I said, there are a lot of fruit and vegetable farms and greenhouses along the way. People seem to dump things in the river bed, I guess figuring they will get washed out to sea in the spring. Not really a lot of trash, really, but bricks and concrete, and things that would decompose eventually.

Like this load of tomatoes.

There were still a lot of perfectly good ones in there.
We picked out four nice ones and were on our way.
Notice that we had bought some celery earlier on in town. Too funny.

Not a bad day... we ended up doing 11 kms (7 miles).

Today is cooler yet... a high of 6C (43F). It was supposed to be sunny, but we haven't seen any of that yet and it's 10:30am as I'm writing this. Today, we have an ambitious plan to ride our bikes to a monastery 10 kms (6 miles) each way. The problem is that the monastery is 500 meters (1,640') higher in altitude that where we are starting from! So we will ride as far as we can, then hike the rest. Or at least that's the plan. We'll see what happens!

    1. It is my choice to carry the backpack all the time. Kevin carries the camera. When it is heavy and we are on long, steep hikes if I find it too much all I have to do is ask Kevin to carry it, although he often asks me if I what him to take it and I almost always turn him down. When we do groceries, I carry an extra cloth bag that he carries back from the store.
