We are liking the scenery in this area!

So much so that we're not getting very far each day! Not that we're in a rush... although we've got a loose goal of reaching the Turkey border by the 20th, which is now only two weeks away.

And the border crossing is 1,400 kms (868 miles) away. I know, that's only 100 kms (67 miles) per day so we've still got quite a bit of time. And as I've said before, if we have to hop on the motorway towards the end to make up some time, then that's what we'll do.

And we've got to start getting up earlier in the morning! We're finding that there aren't enough hours in the day to see and do what we want to. It was after 10:00am by the time we finally got going yesterday. Setting the alarm for 6:30am from now on!

So the first photo from yesterday was actually a video. We had moved on to a nearby village, and I know that the roads through these villages are often very narrow. There is still traffic in both directions, but usually only wide enough for one vehicle... especially when one of those vehicles is Max! Anyhow, Ruth took a video of us going through this little fishing village... fortunately there is very little traffic at this time of year and we didn't have any problems.

Turn up your volume...

We found a spot beyond the village to park. Ruth had looked up a little known cave that we wanted to walk to. It was only about 1.5 kms each way, and most of it was on a road.

Some kind of old building.

Scenery along the way.

Can you see me?

Can you see Ruth?

Ruth, at the cave entrance.

Unfortunately, it was wet and slippery to try to get any further into the cave, so we didn't risk it.

Very cool rock formations.

Ruth, climbing back out.

Here she comes.

When we left that area, the road took us up and over a mountain and we had spectacular views looking down on the area we had been in.

A village up in the mountains behind us.

Max and the view.

We passed a couple of small chapels like this.

The village of Oitylo.

The town church.

This is the main highway leading through this part of the peninsula.

An Ottoman era fort dating to about 1650.
You can hike up to it, but apparently there's not much worth seeing.

We would end up spending the night on the shoreline at the bottom right of this photo.

But first we pulled in here.

The restaurant generously offers free motorhome parking, obviously hoping that you will also come in for dinner. But the reviews weren't great, with some mention of it being overpriced so we decided to pass. We still could have stayed parked there, but it really wasn't that scenic, and we actually found a better spot simply parked beside the road a little further on. It was a really quiet road, so no problem with traffic, especially at this time of year.

We ended up parked here.

We decided to go for a walk along the shore road, which eventually became a dirt road, which eventually disappeared into a rocky shoreline. We continued on for a bit just to see what there was to see.

Interesting rocks.

Ruth, enjoying the view.

Looking across the bay.
This mountain seems to have a constant cloud around it.

There are a lot of new boutique hotels and rental properties here.

Lots of caves.

No idea what this big plastic pipe is/was.
Looked like it had washed up on the shore.

Heading back.

We are heading today to the very southern tip of this part of the peninsula. Unfortunately it looks like the rain returns tomorrow, and into the weekend.

Where we are right now.

  1. The plastic pipe looks like the framework for a fish farming cage. Beautiful scenery!

    1. We think you are right Kris, we would never of thought of that. I looked online to see pictures of the framework that they tend to use in Greece and it definitely looks like very similar. Thank you! :-)

  2. Love the area myself. The flat rocks and ocean look so inviting to jump into water and then sun bath on rocks. Loved the little drive through the fishing village...bet their fish and chips are awesome.

    1. It is definitely a picturesque area that we are in now. I don't think we would have tried swimming where those flat rocks were, the surf looked pretty strong. When I was looking up info on this particular cave they mentioned sunbathing but there was no mention of swimming.

We were really glad that it wasn't busy season as we drove through that little fishing village, I am sure it could be done but it certainly would have been harder to get through.
