It's an odd feeling to have no plans, but we have some ideas

Normally when we travel, we have some sort of deadline. Even if that deadline might be four or five months out, which of course gives us quite a bit of flexibility. But right now, we feel like we don't really have to be anywhere, and it's a bit of an odd feeling.

We do want to go back to Canada this summer for maybe a month or so, but we aren't counting on that happening in the current travel environment. If it happens, then it will be a fairly last minute decision. If it doesn't happen, we have lots of other options.

Of course we have to be aware of our three month maximum time in Turkiye, of which we have completed just over one month. We're thinking of taking the ferry to Cyprus for a month. That would extent our time in Turkiye until May 20 or so, which would make for better weather to exit the country through the northern part.

If things don't look good from a Covid perspective, and we decide to stay in this area, we could do a month in northern Iraq, and then spend summer time in Georgia (the country, not the state!) and Armenia,  Obviously everybody hopes that it doesn't come to that, but if it does, we have lots of interesting options.

If Covid has cleared up, and things are fairly open, we will head back up to Germany and hopefully Norway. Then we'll make our way to Canada at some point. While in Canada, we can start the process of becoming residents of a different country. Yet to be decided exactly which country, but likely either Spain or Portugal.

In the shorter term, we are currently in Antalya and waiting for my new hiking boots to show up. Hopefully by tomorrow! It's been raining on and off the last two days, and fairly hard at times. We are parked with free internet, but with the lack of sunshine our batteries will be getting low by this evening.

We have managed to get out for a walk in between showers.

Max, parked in a big puddle!
There was no puddle when we arrived.

That's a dark cloud!

It wasn't a bad spot, but a few too many cars driving by.

We managed to get out for a walk late afternoon.

Antalya has an interesting waterfront... cliffs and beaches.

Rain in the forecast all day today, but then a nice weekend appears to be ahead of us. At least we're not cold. Highs around 17C (63F) and lows around 10C (50F). Great for sleeping, and we haven't even needed to put the furnace on at all.

And in Canada...

  1. Very odd question, but how does the Spanish spoken in Spain compare to the Spanish spoken in Mexico? Close enough or major differences? I ask because ds, who you 5 years of it in high school and college, both in NC has moved to Tampa and I'm asking him about the Cuban influence on Spanish there. Also, if you relocate to Portugal, will that be a much steeper learning curve with Spanish being a next door language, so to speak?

    1. The Spanish in Spain is certainly different from Mexico in a number of ways but not enough that we can't be understood or understand others, however we found the Spanish in Colombia quite a bit different and much harder to understand. We have been to Cuba before but that was before we were able to speak some Spanish so we can't say how different it is from our perspective.

Yes, that would basically be learning a new language. Portuguese is quite different from Spanish but if you can speak Spanish and French then it makes things a little easier.

  2. Beautiful photos of storm clouds. We had a cold front move through Arizona this past week so it's a tad chilly but the sun is out today. Have a good day.

    1. We read that is was chilly in Arizona, some places even got snow, luckily it doesn't hang around long and things generally warm up quickly again.

  3. A good friend I worked with in Mexico lived in Northern Iraq for 15 years. She loved it there. Most people see Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and others as just deserts. So much more. She retired and now lives back in the U.S. That sounds like a real adventure from the documentaries we've seen.

    1. We have read about how beautiful it is there and how friendly the people are. We love to show people places where the media doesn't tell you the whole story. That area of Iraq is so totally different from the rest of Iraq. We know of some overlanders that are traveling in Iran right now and are absolutely loving it there. :-)
