Made it to the big city of Hamburg

Lots of driving the last few days. Max's odometer crossed the 14,000 km (8,700 mile) mark yesterday. We picked him up on June 18th of last year. It's hard to believe we have had him for almost a year already!

That's quite a few miles in the first year, but I think the second year will be much less.

Yesterday, we did another 210 kms (130 miles) with a lunchtime stop in the town of Uelzen.

Yesterday's drive.

Bride and groom.

Not much in the way of scenery along this route. Lots of farm fields! But we do love the German architecture...

Made it to the town of Uelzen for a lunch stop. Uelzen is known for the interesting train station and some of the original 16th century buildings in the central area. We had some food and then went for a walk around...

It's a pretty town.

There was a street market going on.

But we found things fairly expensive compared to what we would pay in an Aldi or Lidl grocery store. We like the markets in Mexico or Turkey better!

Not sure what this building was. It was directly opposite the big St. Mary's Church, so may have been related to the church.

It was difficult to get a photo of the exterior of the church. There was nowhere to stand to fit it all in! But the interior was interesting.

They began construction of the church in 1270, and the first service was held in 1292. Amazing how they have records of these details.

The current stained glass windows were installed in 1899.

The organ dates from 1756.
It was extensively restored in 2001.

We then walked to the train station, which is one of the main attractions. The station in its current form was designed by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and opened in 2000.

Uelzen Station.

Interesting design.

Uelzen is interesting, and worth a quick stop.

From there, we headed to the outskirts of Hamburg and found a laundromat. A nice modern one, with all fancy electronic machines, and even payment by credit card. Total for everything washed and dried including bedding was €13 ($17.80 CAD, $13.90 USD).

And then into Hamburg. We are parked about 5 kms (3 miles) from the center of the city, so a nice brisk walk of about 45 minutes will get us there. We could take the bikes, but it's not that warm and it's quite windy. We'll walk it.

  1. This is a random question and no hurry with an answer, but what some things that Europeans, be it countries or towns or businesses, etc... do that we here in the States/Canada could do? This may be a question for when you aren't in as much of a rush.

    1. I think before we could even try to answer a question like that we need to know what in what context you mean as to what the States/Canada could do?

Kevin said that if you want to follow us directly you need to go to the "follow.it" website and change your preferences or he said that the email that you get from them should have an edit option in the top right hand corner of the email and you could click on that and then change your preference. I hope this helps.
