Stuck in the mud!

We got up early and drove Max down from his beautiful spot and parked lower down so that we had a better cell signal.

We're sitting there having our morning tea and hot chocolate when I hear some bells. You know, the type that sheep wear. Sure enough, I see a couple of sheep out the side window. Then I see more, and more... and before you know it Max was completely surrounded by sheep!

Have a look at this...

Holy cow... I mean sheep!

Sheep everywhere!

And then we drove up to Alba Iulia. We have been to the city of Alba Iulia before, Back in November 2016, so we likely won't be visiting the city itself again. But we are there to visit with our friend Gabi and his new wife and baby.

Scenery along the way.

Romania in the spring is very green!

We arrived at Gabi's house. We are in the small village of Oarda de Sus about 7 kms (4 miles) from Alba Iulia. Max is parked in the garden. We met his new Vietnamese wife Ha, and their new baby Oliver. More about them another day.

We relaxed for the afternoon. It looked like it was going to rain, but they kept putting it off, and eventually around 4:00 we decided to go for a hike. Gabi said he would take us to a place nearby. He has a small 4x4 with a rooftop tent and we hopped in that along with his dog Roxy to take some backroads.

Heading through some farm fields.

View near the top.

But then we came to a forested area and down below were some odd red cliff formations. It's called Râpa Roșie.

Looking down on Râpa Roșie.

Beautiful area.

Interesting cliffs.

Some people overnight in campers at the area bottom left.
You can see one couple having a picnic there.

Lots of paths to follow.

Can you see the other hikers on the lower right?
If you click on the photo you can zoom in.

Hmm. Not sure about this.

We were trying to get to the top of that ridge.

Gabi went on ahead to see if there is a trail.

Roxy went and checked it out too.

Scenery along the way.

Gabi!

Beautiful view near the top.

Another view.

Ruth and Gabi... made it to the top!

Walking back to the car.

Now, I had mentioned that we drove up there in a small 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Gabi had mentioned that there was a hunting cabin nearby, and we went and visited that. As we were leaving, he said he thought he knew of a shorter route to get back to the village. So we start taking this old overgrown track through the forest. Eventually, we come to a bit of a mud puddle and he puts the little vehicle in four wheel drive.

We got about half way through, and that was it.

Stuck.

Stuck in the mud!

So we got out and loaded a bunch of sticks and tree branches into the mud. I took a couple of videos of the effort to get out...

First try.

Nope, that didn't work. We loaded some more sticks in and tried again!

Second try. Success!

All kinds of fun. Didn't get back to Max until almost 7:30pm!

Not sure what's on the agenda for today. They're calling for rain again this afternoon, but like yesterday it may not arrive. We'll see. It might be a relax day.

And in Canada...

  1. I so miss Romania in the springtime! Blossoms and flowers are everywhere and it's so green! I'm loving your journey through the country I love. It's gorgeous there while it's still brown in Alaska, but leaves are finally opening on trees here, rhubarb is growing, and birds are returning.

    1. It certainly is a beautiful time of the year to be here in Romania. When we were here last time it was November and everything was brown for the most part. Glad to hear that Alaska is starting to bloom into spring because soon we will be in Norway and it will probably be a little more weather like to Alaska.
