Fruit and vegetable prices in Norway

We got up at 6:30am and left Stavanger right away. It's nice driving when there's absolutely no traffic.

Saturday was a bit of a maintenance day. We headed directly to a motorhome dealership where they have a free dump station and fresh water fill, free overnight parking with electric, and free WiFi. It's not scenic by any means, located in an industrial park, but it suited us for a couple of hours of unlimited internet use.

We had showers and emptied and filled the tanks.

It was after lunch by the time we headed to the small coastal town of Egersund where I had read about a reasonably priced laundromat located at the marina.

An historic bridge along the way.

There is a lot more farming in this area.

The fields had a lot of rock in them.

But over the centuries, many have been cleared of rock.

We can see the sea!

Hitler's Teeth.

If you didn't know the significance of these oddly shaped rocks, you would just shake your head and wonder why they were there. Rows of strategically placed rocks and cement were put in place by the occupying Nazis during WWII to prevent a British invasion from the sea. Thousands of man hours were put into this work, mostly by Russian prisoners of war.

We got to Egersund, and the place was a bit of a zoo with very few parking options, and even the paid parking lots were really busy. We did have a "plan B" for laundry, so we carried on to the big Extra grocery store on the outskirts of town.

When we're in "cheap" countries, we have often posted the deals we get on fruits and vegetables, so we thought you'd like to see what we pay for produce here in Norway.

All of this cost 191.4 kr
$24.50 CAD
$18.80 USD
€18.65

500 g Green Grapes (Spain) 33.9 kr, $4.34 CAD, $3.33 USD
Iceberg Lettuce (Norway) 25.6 kr, $3.28 CAD, $2.52 USD
1.5 kg Bag of Potatoes (Norway) 31.2 kr, $4.00 CAD, $3.07 USD
4 Small Red Peppers (Netherlands) 16 kr, $2.05 CAD, $1.57 USD
350 g Brussel Sprouts (Netherlands) 29.9 kr, $3.83 CAD, $2.94 USD
1 kg Apples (Italy) 18.9 kr, $2.42 CAD, $1.86 USD
1 kg Carrots (Norway) 35.9 kr, $4.60 CAD, $3.53 USD

Just for fun, here's what we bought in Turkiye in January...

Total for everything... $5.65 CAD, $4.50 USD!!!

Notice also the difference in packaging.

Of course we bought a lot of other stuff as well. Chicken and beef is pricey, but pork, fish, and seafood is actually reasonable. We've been eating a lot of salmon!

With groceries done, we headed out to find an overnight spot.

More of the Norwegian cabin culture.

Looking out to the North Sea.

Scenery along the way.

Traffic delay!

We actually don't see many cattle here.

More scenery.

We turned down a narrow dirt road that went for two kms and led to a parking lot suitable for maybe three or four motorhomes. One was already there, and we took the end spot so that at least we would have one side with a view.

Sure enough, someone else came in late and parked about 2 feet away from us on the other side. But at least they were quiet.

We went for an evening walk and did about 5 kms (3 miles) up to a dam system above where we were parked.

I didn't get a shot of Max's parking spot, but he was on the left side of this lake.

A small dam.

This road led up to a couple of cabins.

It was really pretty up there.

It was a nice evening.

Heading back down.

Up early again this morning, and headed to the next village to do laundry!

Nice price drop on Samsung Tablets and Laptops.

And in Canada...

Nice price drop on JBL Speakers and Earphones.

    1. We have said the same thing about Norway in certain areas, and other areas remind us of Northern Ontario and British Columbia as well as the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska.

  2. That is quite the price difference in food but January was before the Russian Invasion on Ukraine. Prices have skyrocketed since.
Be Safe and Enjoy the views.

    It's about time.

    1. It is a huge difference! Tthe Turkish prices really didn't change much after the invasion on Ukraine. We were in Turkiye right up until the middle of April and we didn't see a very big increase at all in the price of the fresh produce but I am sure it affected other countries much more.

It will be interesting to how the prices in Canada will compare to these and from when we were there last year at about the same time.

  3. The weather in Finland has been similar these past few days and temps staying below 20 degrees. Fruit and veg prices are similar too and we look forward to going back to southern Turkey and Cyprus for the autumn and winter. By bus too. Bob has vowed to avoid planes as much as possible !.

    1. Sorry to hear that your weather isn't a whole lot better than ours. We are not surprised to hear that the prices in Finland are similar to here. We sure do miss the prices that we were paying in Turkiye and the fact that there were so many weekly markets there. It is nice to be able to offset the prices of expensive countries with cheap countries throughout the year, it all balances out in the end.

That sounds like a great way to make your way back to Turkiye. We can understand Bob's reasoning for not wanting to take a plane these days with the mess that many airports are dealing with. Our fingers are crossed that we won't have any major issues next month.

  4. Blueberry season has started here in Finland so they are possibly ripe there too especially as you are in the south. Hope you can find lots and make some preserves as well

    1. Yes, they are just coming in now. I ate a some when we were out on one of our hikes. I am bringing along a container for our next hike so that we can pick some and have with our oatmeal in the mornings. I won't be making any preserves. Max will be sitting for three months without us there plus the fact that we just don't have the space.

  5. Nice to see some pretty blue skies there! Your comparison of Norway's produce prices vs. Turkiye's was very similar to US vs Mexican produce prices. This is why we now have a garden here in the US!

    1. It was wonderful to see some blue sky and we had a good day yesterday to with the weather, let's hope it continues. :-)

We found that the prices of fruits and vegetables were even better in Turkiye than they were in Mexico, and we thought the prices in Mexico were good!
