Made it to Ottawa

But we're not staying.

Writing this at Ottawa airport as an overnight connection. We flew in from Calgary last night, arriving at just after midnight, and our connecting flight to Toronto leaves at 6:45am this morning. Then we have another connecting flight to Halifax later this morning.

Yes, it's an odd flight route, since they do actually have direct flights from Calgary to Halifax. But I booked the flight to Ottawa in March, at the time not knowing that our daughter was moving to Nova Scotia in August! I could have cancelled and rebooked, but it was going to be quite a bit more expensive and we just couldn't justify the extra. Generally, we don't really care how long it takes us to get somewhere... we just prefer to do it as cheaply as possible.

Anyhow, we returned the car rental in downtown Calgary early, and went for a walk around the central area. Downtown Calgary isn't very spectacular although there are a couple of interesting art installations and a nice downtown park.

Calgary Tower used to be the highest viewpoint around.

Calgary has a city bylaw that any new construction must be accompanied by an art installation valued at 1% of the cost of the project.

This is one of the more interesting ones.

Interesting architecture.

Calgary Tower was completed in 1968.
It's looking a little dated.

We walked through Chinatown and thought this sign was interesting.

Princess Island Park.

The pedestrian Peace Bridge over the Bow River.

The Bow River in Calgary.

Our friend Harold drove us to the airport and we had an uneventful flight from Calgary to Ottawa. Then a very short and uncomfortable sleep for three and a half hours in Ottawa airport, and now we are ready to board our flight to Toronto and then connect to Halifax.

    1. It is to a certain extent because is was known for being a big "oil" town a number of years ago and lots of important companies built these tall and impressive buildings. Times have changed over the years now and some of these companies have left Calgary. What we really enjoyed here though is all the park space along the river and how nice they have made it. We really liked that art installation and the idea that each time sometime is built that they have to include art into their design.
