Reuniting with Max

It was a rain day yesterday, and I had to work for a couple of hours so we never left the house. Even sat and watched a few trivia game shows on the television in the afternoon!

But, I also got our trip back to Germany organized.

We are flying to Albania on October 2nd with Ruth's cousin Helen and her husband Tony. Helen and Tony return to England on the 16th, but Ruth and I are staying longer and plan to get into Kosovo in the latter part of the month.

But we have a car rental that we will need to return to Tirana (the capital of Albania), so we needed to fly out of Tirana back to Germany where Max will be waiting for us.

And, we are currently playing "the Schengen Shuffle". This is the term coined by the British since Brexit regarding the act of organizing your travel movements around the Schengen visa allowance in order to optimize your possible travel time in Europe while still keeping within the rules. So because we had spent quite a lot of time in Norway, and Norway is part of the Schengen zone, we cannot re-enter the zone until November 5th.

I first looked at flights from Tirana to Frankfurt and could have easily got a one way nonstop for about $175 CAD which is not great, but not too bad. But then I searched all of Germany to see if there was anything cheaper to other locations and hit the jackpot!

Wizz Air (a discount airline operating out of Hungary) had a flight on November 5th from Tirana to Dortmund which is much closer to where Max is located. And the price was only €35!

As I said, Wizz Air is a discount airline... which means that the €35 fare is a bare bones price and you need to read the fine print and add on any extras that you want. And the only extra we needed was our carry on bags to put in the overhead bins at a cost of €21 each. So, for €56 ($75 CAD, $55 USD) each, we have our flights booked to return to Max on November 5th.

Gatwick to Tirana on Oct 2nd
and Tirana to Dortmund on Nov 5th.

We will still need to do about an hour train ride from Dortmund to Dulmen, but that's fine.

So, while we enjoy doing some "backpack" style travel for a couple of months, we look forward to reuniting with Max.

It's a beautiful sunny blue sky today, so we are headed out to do some more sightseeing... this time we are taking the bus a few miles west to the town of Halifax.

And in Canada...

    1. Yep, that is a good thing! We are paying close attention to the storm because our daughter and her family will feel the effects of it though.
