What's the plan for this winter?

Yesterday was a bit of a dreary day with rain on and off, although the temperature was warm enough. Things look like they're improved this morning though, with some blue sky peaking through. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice though, with a high of 20C (68F). Not quite shorts and t-shirt weather, but we're getting there.

We did some driving to get closer to our house sitting assignment. Still about two hours to go today, but that's fine because they don't want us to arrive until 4:00pm.

The area we drove through next to the Erbo River is really pretty  We're going to have to remember that area for a future trip and spend more time there.

The Ebro River.

Scenery along the way.

We got down to the coast and took a secondary road. Not much to see though. Lots of oranges! You may have heard of Valencia oranges? We are only about two hours from Valencia, but it seems they have a wide growing region.

Shame about this building.

Oranges!

Huge fields of orange trees.

We took this freshly paved back road through an orange grove.

We ended up on top of a hill.
Great place to spend the night. We were joined later by two other vans.

Overlooking the orange groves.

There is a church and restaurant up here.

Dated 1724.

The ceiling.

The walls and floor were tiled.

Big cross on top of the hill.

Ruth, trying to say hello to some cats.
They were scaredy cats though!

So, to update you about our plans for this winter...

We're heading slowly down to Gibraltar area over the next four weeks or so. Then, sometime between January 5th to the 10th we will take Max on a ferry to Morocco.

We'll have a week and a half or so to make our way to Casablanca where we will find somewhere to store Max for eleven days while we fly to Mauritania on January 20th.

Returning to Casablanca on January 31st, we will continue south in Morocco and into Western Sahara over the month of February. Then head north and return to Casablanca by March 7th to meet our daughter Lindsey and grandkids Sadie and Cameron who will visit with us until March 23rd. That will be a great cultural experience for them! The tickets are now bought, so they are definitely coming!

After they leave, we will return to Spain in mid April and drive up to the north coast to take the ferry to Ireland.

Last time we updated you in September, we were hoping to get to Mexico this winter, but now that is unlikely to happen. Flights were really expensive, and then this opportunity to Mauritania came up. The trip had been sold out and we were on the waiting list in case someone cancelled, which they did. We decided to go for it.

So, that's where things stand. It should be an exciting winter!

  1. Geography waz always a strong subject for me, but Mauritania still sounds like it should be a Caribbean island nation. I can't wait to see how it differs from your time in Southern Africa.

    1. It reminds me of the fictional country from the Marx Brothers movie (that was Freedonia).

    3. We have never seen that movie so we can't make a comparison. You will have to let us know once we visit Mauritania if it still reminds you of Freedonia.

    4. No, I meant that the name Mauritania sounds like it could be a fictional country in a movie, like Freedonia.
