It obviously doesn't bother them or they would do something to fix it.

We had a relaxing morning, and then set off on a hike up the hill behind the campground. We didn't really have any kind of destination, just to get some exercise and see if we could find some views along the way.

Up on a paved road to the town of Moulay Moustapha El Hamdouchi (that's a mouthful!) and then a dirt track to the top.

It was a gorgeous afternoon.
Sunny blue skies and a high of about 20C (68F).

Pretty little orange wildflower.

Heading higher.

We found one viewpoint.

And another where I could zoom in on the ruins at Volubilis in the distance.

We came across this fellow at the side of the path.

Heading higher.

Me, overlooking the town of Moulay Moustapha El Hamdouchi.

Zoomed in on the town.

Taking a break and enjoying the view.

In the distance is the town of Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouch.

I should also mention that it's not all beautiful scenery. Morocco has a serious trash problem. They made an effort in 2016 when they banned single use plastic bags, but without enforcement of the law, many businesses continue to use them.

Unfortunately, this is a fairly common sight.

But, it obviously doesn't bother them or they would do something to fix it.

We did 10 kms (6.2 miles) and climbed 350 meters (1,150') in altitude.

Back at Max, we sat outside and watched the campground fill up. Much busier than it was the evening before. One fellow walked by, and said in perfect English "Are you from Canada?"

Last time we were in Canada, we brought back a couple of Canada flag stickers and put them on the front and rear bumpers. With a German license plate we were finding a lot of Germans would say hello expecting us to be able to speak German.

We invited Paul over to sit with us during happy hour. He's from Bermuda, but went to school in Halifax, and his wife is from Lethbridge. He's traveling alone in a campervan because his wife didn't want to.

Then, about half way through he says "Kevin and Ruth" and he hesitated, "...do you guys have a travel blog?" He doesn't follow regularly, but remembered coming across it a couple of times when he was doing research. He bought his van in Belgium and registered it in Andorra.

Anyway, nice to sit with a fellow English speaker and share travel stories.

Today, we are off to the big city of Meknes (pop 650,000) to do some grocery shopping, and then to see the monkeys and do some hiking in the cedar forest near the town of Azrou.

  1. Aren't you glad Tony Bennett didn't leave his heart in Moulay, etc., etc.?

  2. I know nothing about Morocco other than what I've read in your blog. But I would have never guessed it was so green and lush! I was thinking desert. Very interesting!

    2. Yes, we can see that happening, we were actually talking about that while we were driving the other day, saying how if we didn't mention where we were that people would have no idea that we were in Morocoo. Morocco is a fairly large country with a varied ecosystem. You will see the desert part of the country soon enough.

  3. We found Morocco’s vegetation to be very similar to Australia’s.
Sadly I think the problem with rubbish is common in those type of countries, Jordan (which I love) is the same.

    1. Yes, I think we would agree with you on the vegetation.

You are correct, this problem with rubbish is common in a number of countries that we have been too but for some reason, it just seems to be worse here. We take it for what it is, we learned that a long time ago with our travels through Mexico. We try to focus on the beautiful scenery rather than the garbage.
