A gorgeous free camping spot

Our friends Glen and Steve had told me about a waterfall near the village of Riofrio where there was a difficult to access, but beautiful overnight spot.

It turned out that we couldn't access it all, but we found an even better spot nearby!

Once again on the backroads, we headed through some more beautiful scenery. This is a really pretty area.

Heading higher again.

View looking back.

Getting near the top.

Coming down the other side towards the village of Riofrio.

There's the village.

Some of these old villages have some pretty tight roadways... built for donkey carts back in the day. So I found somewhere to pull over and I walked through just to make sure Max wasn't going to get stuck somewhere. The village was like a ghost town. I saw four cats, and one person in the distance.

But, I found the proper route through, and I went back to get Max and Ruth.

On the other side of the village, I found the road that leads to the waterfall and the parking area above.

Uh oh.

The ground by the stream was far too soft and I wasn't about to attempt going across without four wheel drive and some higher ground clearance. Max's eventual replacement might have to have four wheel drive!

We parked Max and walked across a narrow concrete bridge.

Looking back at Max.

Up at the top, it's true... the small parking area offered a fantastic view.

Looking down on the village.

View from the upper parking.

The waterfall was nothing special though.

We went back to Max, and decided to walk a ways along the dirt road. Sure enough, there was a gorgeous spot by the stream, and Max was quite happy to head over there and park with the cows!

Yep, this will do for a couple of nights!

There was a plaque and a small cross on a boulder opposite us.

Turns out it has something to do with a murder that took place in the 1700's and the parents of the girl who was killed built this memorial and carved the story into the rock. The girl was killed by her own brother.

There are also several of these large round carvings into the rock.
Has to do with how they milled grain back in the day.

View out the side window.

Checking my map, this little dirt road goes for about 4 kms (2.5 miles) so we decided to go for a stroll after lunch.

Looking back at Max and the cows.

Me, and the view.

A beautiful walk.

Scenery along the way.

We ended up doing 6 kms (3.7 miles) with enough uphill to get the heart beating.

A couple of people walked by in the evening, just out to get some exercise. And a total of two vehicles drove by to get to the farming plots along this road. One guy said our spot was "muy tranquilo"... very peaceful, and said we would be fine to stay the night.

And we were fine... a very quiet night. But chilly... it was only 7C (45F) inside the motorhome when we woke up. Turns out we are at 1,220 meters (4,000') in altitude!

Pretty sure we're going to stay another day here, then head to Avila tomorrow morning.
