Semana Santa is the name of the Holy Week celebrations that take place in Spanish speaking countries. It's a big deal in many communities, and in fact it's a big tourist draw for some of them as well.
Cordoba, Spain is one of those places where there is a lot going on. We didn't plan to be here during this time, it just happened to be a place we wanted to visit, and coincidentally we arrived here this week. We're really lucky to have a free parking space for Max that's really close to everything that's going on.
Our first stop yesterday morning was to the Royal Stables where we had read that there is free entry. However, it turns out that they are still stuck in a Covid response that hasn't been rescinded yet, and it now costs €5 to get in. So we passed on that, but we made the decision to buy tickets to the Andalusian Horse Equestrian Show which then includes admission to the stables. The show is at 8:00pm tonight.
Scenery along the way.
A cat at the entrance to his house.
At the stables admission gate, I managed to zoom in a couple of photos.
Zoomed inside the stables.
From there, we did a circular route to a park on the other side of the river, but it was nothing special.
Looking across to the old Roman Bridge.
Remains of another old mill.
Nice view of old town Cordoba.
Back at Max for lunch, and we just relaxed for the afternoon. But this time, we went out in the evening again. These Easter religious processions take place every night this week, and begin around 5:00pm. They don't end until about 1:30am!
There are 38 different "brotherhoods" who take part.
But they include both men and women.
They wear these funny hats and hoods.
Each procession includes at least one of these huge floats being carried by a dozen or so people.
I took a couple of videos for you...
Full moon above the bell tower.
Today we are going to walk up to another park on the north edge of the city. Then this evening the horse show starts at 8:00pm, but we bought the premium seating that allows us in for the warm up ahead of time.
Once again, here's something for our Canadian readers. It's a pet peeve of mine that the big Canadian banks aren't paying much interest on savings. So I did some research into the best alternative options.
The online banks and the credit unions do slightly better. But the best I could find is an online bank called EQ Bank Canada.
They pay 2.5% interest on every dollar, with no fees at all. And a one year GIC is at 4.75%.
Also, if you open an account through this link, we both get a cash bonus of twenty bucks when you make your first deposit of $100 or more within 30 days of opening the account.
It's not much, but every little bit helps. Besides, that interest looks far better in my account than in theirs!

They wore those hoods San Luis Potosi on Good Friday in the Procession of Silence, visiting each station of the cross. They were first used by the Carmelites in Mexico City (in Mexico although I am sure the tradition comes from Spain).
ReplyDeleteWe have a picture of me standing by at statue in San Luis Potosi, of one of these men of the brotherhood and it was also representing the Procession of Silence. And yes, this tradition would have been brought over by Spain to Mexico.
DeleteHere's an explanation of the pointy hats. If you are remotely interested.
ReplyDeleteI think that you forget to include the link but I have already read about the pointy hats and why they are worn during the Easter processions. Thank you for thinking of us. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capirote#:~:text=Capirote%20are%20worn%20by%20penitents,repent%2C%20but%20instead%20to%20God.
DeleteDuh. I'm always doing that. Thanks for posting it for me.
DeleteLol, no worries, I have been known to do that too!
