We think we're going to like Ireland!

If the first day is any indication, we think we're going to like Ireland!

We did get a few drops of rain at various times throughout the day, but not enough to stop us from getting out to do things. More sunshine than we expected, and the temperature was a pleasant 17C (63F).

And wait till you see our overnight spot! Now, this was what we had visions of!

Because we had parked in the town of Wexford, we figured we might as well wander around to see what there was to see. So before we headed out, we went for a walk in the central area. First stop was a shop I had seen the day before when I had gone to buy the SIM card for the phone.

There are a lot of pubs in Wexford!

We made it to the Trespass Outdoor Clothing shop, and I needed a new pair of lightweight summer hiking pants. We were helped by a friendly lady named Eilish, and I ended up with exactly what I wanted.

Eilish, our sales lady!

I spent a little more than planned, at €59.99 ($88 CAD, $66 USD), however I wasn't happy with the last pair of Columbia hiking pants I bought, and actually I'm pretty much done with buying any more Columbia gear. Hopefully these will last longer.

This big church was completed in 1918.

Entrance to the Georgia Southern University campus.

Apparently there is a 200 year history of trade and immigration between Savannah, Georgia and Wexford, Ireland, so Georgia Southern University chose Wexford for its study abroad program.

Wexford waterfront.

We popped into a couple of charity shops.

Scenery along the way.

Back at Max around 11:30am, and we headed out for a drive down to the south coast. We figure we'll head west for a week or ten days and see how far we get before heading across country towards Dublin for the wedding on May 25th.

The secondary roads are quite narrow.

We stopped at the town of Fethard to have a look at the old castle ruins...

Fethard Castle dates back to the 15th century.

It's not in very good shape, and a fence prevents you from exploring more.

Back on the road.

It didn't take us long to find our first fabulous overnight spot for Max...

Yep, this will do!

Wild camping is relatively easy in Ireland, although lately there have been a lot of town councils installing height barriers which prohibit motorhomes from entering certain parking areas. But otherwise, if there are no signs prohibiting it, you are pretty much permitted to park overnight where you like.

The view out our side window!

After dinner, we went for a walk along the cliffs. Sunrise is at 5:42am, and sunset at 9:08pm, so we have a glorious 15.5 hours of daylight right now.

Still light at almost 9:00pm

Looking back at where Max is parked.

Wildflowers at sunset.

So, a great first day in Ireland!

There are a lot of walks we can do from here, so we're tempted to stay another night. We'll see!

  1. What a gorgeous and empty spot! Did you end up having it all to yourself. This is what dreams are made of, for sure.

    1. It was a great spot and unfortunately no, we didn't have it to ourselves. A guy car "camping" was also there but once we went to sleep everything was nice and quiet. Our friends that were in Ireland two summers ago, said that we are going to find lots of other places just like this! :-)
