Back in Ottawa

Sunday morning, we said goodbye to Alex, CJ, and Lucy the dog at around 11:00am and did the long drive back to Manotick (Ottawa). It was pouring rain for the first two hours or so of the drive.

We took the route that goes through Algonquin Provincial Park. Would have liked to have stopped for a hike, but with the mandatory $21 daily pass to stop at a trailhead, it's just not worth it.

Ruth had packed sandwiches (much better and far cheaper than Subway!) and so we stopped for lunch just after the park in the town of Whitney.

Then we stopped again at Red Pine Camp on Golden Lake. This is the camp my parents took our family to as kids, starting in 1964. I also worked there for the summer in 1978 when I was 16. That's where I met all my guy friends who I will be seeing this coming weekend.

The camp is closed for the season, although they have some specialty groups renting it for a few weekends in September so it's still open enough to wander around.

Me, at Red Pine Camp.

Ruth, on the dock at Golden Lake.

Yesterday's drive, 403 kms (250 miles).

Made it home around 5:00pm and watched the taped version of the Blue Jays. They won again in a nailbiter 3-2. After sweeping the Red Sox, they are in a pretty good position to get a playoff spot.

While I was watching the game, I got the new phone set up. Pretty cool how it transfers all of your apps and data from the old phone to the new phone wirelessly. The only thing that was a bit time consuming was getting signed into all the accounts again. Took about three hours in total!

So far, I really like it. Of course using the apps isn't much different than on the old phone, except that because of the huge increase in RAM and storage, everything happens so much smoother, and pretty much instantly.

Today, I will start playing with the camera part of it. There's going to be a bit of a learning curve, I think.

And in Canada...

  1. Sorry, $21 for a day pass? What are taxes for? That's whacky.

    1. Yep, you got that right and if you want to camp then you have to pay the camping fee on top of that. Depending on the campground and the site, if you want electric then you are looking at $52 to $57 a night, without electric I think you are looking at $42 to $51 a night, plus the day use fee! Camping here in Canada isn't cheap anymore and it hasn't been for a long time.

  2. Back in the day, we use to drive to National Parks without reservations. Now they are so overrun with people, they require reservations to visit and camp. I miss traveling without making reservations for everything.

    1. Yep, it is very hard to camp in a National Park or a State/Provincial Park these days without having a reservation. Some of our parks you have to make reservations almost a year ahead of time if you want a spot, it's crazy.

We loved traveling in Max because we almost always boondocked/dry camped and didn't need to go to a campground so we didn't need reservations. Now that we don't have Max, we are going to have to make reservations as we go.
