But then this is the first real warm day we've had in a long time! I wouldn't want to live in a place where it's like that every day, but I sure don't mind it for a couple of days.
I was trying to figure out what to do about footwear. When we do our senior backpacking style of travel, we only travel with hiking boots and walking sandals. But for the next six weeks we're doing a 5 km (3 mile) powerwalk every morning, and while the hiking boots work alright for that, they're not ideal.
Mine are starting to wear out, but I could probably squeeze another couple of months out of them. Ruth's will probably do for this winter, although she needs new insoles.
Our friend Kim donated a decent pair of walking shoes that Ruth can use (thanks Kim!), but I though maybe I could find a decent quality, relatively inexpensive pair that were lightweight enough that I could bring them with me. I know, that's a bit too much to ask.
We stopped in to a local outdoors store that happens to be where Ruth's brother works part time. I had a quick look at shoes, but they didn't have much of anything under a hundred bucks. I wasn't motivated to spend that much. However, Ruth noticed a fantastic deal on men's Oboz hiking boots.
They happened to have my size, and I tried them on. I walked around the store for about ten minutes with them on. They felt really good!
We were really happy with the last pair of Oboz we had, so I decided to buy these. Besides, as I said... they were a great price. I searched online and the cheapest I could find them was $179. These ones were regular $219 on sale for $109. What a deal!
My new pair of Oboz!
So now, I will still do our morning power walk with my old hiking boots. They're totally fine for that, and I won't mind wearing them out on the pavement each day. Then I'll trash them when we leave.
Speaking of deals, I noticed that the credit for our overbooked flight compensation from Air France came through on our credit card.
Taking the foreign exchange into consideration, we had paid $856 CAD each for the round trip tickets, They reimbursed us $875 CAD each. So not only was our flight over for free, our return flight from Halifax to Toronto to Paris in October is also free.
Despite the bit of a headache on the way over, we would do it again in a heartbeat. What a deal!
First day of school for our grandkids...
Sadie (10) off to grade 5.
Cameron (12) off to grade 7.
Another warm one today, but followed by a cold front and rain moving in overnight. Back to normal temperatures tomorrow.

And in Canada...
That's a great deal on those boots, and of course your airline refund! Excellent luck.
ReplyDeleteYep, Kevin is really happy with the price and he said that the boots are comfortable which makes the deal even better. He was totally happy with his last set of Oboz so hopefully these ones will be just as good.
DeleteAir France was very quick at sending us our compensation for the overbooked flight. Now we just have to sit and wait to see how long it will take Air Canada to get back to us with our refund for the canceled flight and to see how much it will be, if they get back to us!
