Tashkent to Fergana train ride

We like traveling by train, and here in Uzbekistan it's both easy and inexpensive. The ticket booking website is in English and is easy to navigate, and you simply pay by credit card.

On Saturday, we took the train from Tashkent to Fergana, a five hour trip.

The cost was $13.30 CAD ($9.65 USD) each.

The train was departing at 7:56am, so we were up early and out the door for our taxi just before 7:00am. No traffic to speak of, and we arrived at the station 15 minutes later.

Tashkent train station.

Ussie with the train.

Seats are all pre-booked so you know where you're sitting.

We departed and arrived exactly on schedule!

Scenery along the way.

We passed this huge coal mine.

We went through the mountains, as well as a 19 km (12 mile) long tunnel.

And then into the Fergana Valley below.

This is the driving route, but the train route was pretty similar.

Arrived at our accommodation. The exterior of the building is pretty run down, but the apartment itself is okay. The host is a good guy though, and I think he is a big reason for the high ratings. He speaks pretty good English and he's very helpful with things to do in the area, and helping with transportation options etcetera.

Our apartment building!

I forgot to get photos of the inside before we messed it up! It's okay, but not great. There are a lot of ten star reviews, but the host has two different properties and they're not separated which I think they should be and I'm going to mention that to him. While this is okay, it's not really what I was expecting, although it's not bad enough to complain about. Also, we both slept really well last night, so I guess that counts!

Old memory of the Soviet Union sitting outside the building.

Today, we are just going to wander around town, and make our way to the local airport where we want to try to book a flight on a 50 year old Russian biplane! More about that tomorrow!
