More touring Langkawi, and met some fellow nomads

We belong to a facebook group called "Senior Nomads" that has about 8,000 members, and Ruth had posted asking if there were any other nomads in Langkawi who wanted to meet up. Jim and Laura responded, so we got together for a coffee yesterday morning.

They are a little younger than us, and are from Devon, England.

Another beautiful day on Langkawi Island.

Breakfast with fellow nomads Laura and Jim.

They were on their way to get on the ferry back to the mainland, so we gave them a ride to the ferry port, then we went for a walk at a nearby park.

They have this huge eagle statue welcoming you to Langkawi.

It's pretty impressive!

Ruth, enjoying the view from the park.

Strange that there was hardly anybody at the park or this beach.

Managed to get pretty close to this hornbill.

They sure are a funny looking bird.

Not sure what this long tailed thing was, but it was too far away to get a decent shot.

This path was freshly paved, and with decorative painting on it.

We hopped back in the car and drove to the other side of the island to check out the cable car, as well as the world's longest curved skybridge. Both look like fun tourist attractions, but they are a quite expensive compared to the local economy. The cable car alone is RM85 ($18.25 USD, $24.50 CAD), so we're going to pass on that. Then there is another smaller charge for the skybridge once you're up there. We found a nearby hike that offers similar views, so we're going to get up early one day this week and attempt the hike, even though some reports say it's quite tough.

Looking up at the cable car station and the new skybridge.

From there, we drove over to Sandy Skulls Beach...

View of Ko Sarai Island (Thailand).

Sandy Skulls Beach is quite nice.

Then we drove over to check out another possible tour boat deal. This one is at the UNESCO GeoPark and is RM100 ($21.50 USD, $28.75 CAD), for a shared tour... so about the same as the private tour we priced out the other day. However, this one is for a 4 hour tour, compared to a 2 hour tour, plus it includes lunch. I think we're going to book it.

Mangrove roots.

They have a new visitors center at the GeoPark.

This is where we will start our boat tour.

Haven't booked it yet, but we will.

Sunny and 32C (90F) today. Looks like a perfect day to go for a swim and sit in the shade on the beach.

Good deal on this Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch.

And in Canada...

  1. Hard to imagine 90F as we in the US freeze! And Canada is even worse, of course! Hornbills are the strangest birds, I agree. The one with the long tail might be some kind of magpie, but too hard to tell from the photo.

    1. We will suffer with the heat here rather that take the freezing cold that they are getting back in the US and Canada. Kevin's sister who lives just outside of Calgary, Alberta had a high of -39C (-38F) the other day!

Agreed the hornbills are definitely an odd looking bird, we some some in Tanzania as well. That other bird is a Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, I think that is the first time that we have ever seen one of them.

  2. Enjoy the heat! The cold and rain here is a mess. We are going to SMA in a few days where it's much warmer. It looks like you're in a beautiful area.

    1. It is nice that you have somewhere else to go and that it isn't a big drive for you and you like San Miguel.

It is a nice area and there are some beautiful beaches, it is a good place to relax for a week but that is about as long as we can manage, we like a little more adventure than this.
