I wanted to leave our options open

We finally made it out of Phnom Penh.

Even when we're in a place that we really like, we feel the need to move on after two weeks or so. So when we're in a place that we don't like, five days is about four days too many! And so it was with Phnom Penh.

Unfortunately, we don't have much choice but to stay there another night on our way back through. We have to cross into Vietnam at a preapproved border point and the one we put on the application is most convenient going through Phnom Penh. So we have to head back that way, do another night, then cross into Vietnam.

Oh well. It is what it is.

In the meantime, Kampot is much better.

We took a tuk-tuk to get to the departure point of the minibus. We were supposed to leave at 12:30pm, but we were about 15 minutes late leaving.

The minibus was full, with 15 passengers. There were only three locals, with the rest being western tourists. Mostly younger people, but one other couple about our age.

It cost $9 USD ($12 CAD) each for the three hour ride. But we moved right along, and arrived earlier than expected.

Kampot is split by a river system.

We are actually staying on the quieter side of the river, so we walk across a pedestrian/scooter bridge to get to the busier side.

The scenery is actually quite nice here.

We were able to walk from the bus arrival point to our accommodation. After spending $33 USD (43 CAD) a night in Phnom Penh, we needed to cut back a little in that category, so found a basic room here for $12 USD ($15 CAD) a night.

No air conditioning, but a couple of strong fans.

I had only booked it for one night, because I wanted to leave our options open. It turns out the room is already booked for the future, but they've said we can stay in an identical room without a window for $9 USD ($11.50 CAD) a night. We'll probably do that because they have a free washing machine here and we need to do laundry! We'll find somewhere else after that. There is a lot of choice.

But it's not ideal. Even with the fans, it's pretty warm here. (Having said that, we did sleep well last night!)

They have a rooftop outdoor space to relax.

First thing we did was to go have some food.

A huge building where work hasn't been done in a long time.

Another one on the opposite side of the river.

Huge bougainvillea plant.

We found a Turkish place that did a nice Greek salad.

Quite a few more tourists here. Lots of British people. We had never even heard of Kampot before we came to Cambodia.

They have a nice river walkway.

Dark clouds, but it never did rain.

Of course we are going to head up into the mountains one day.

Oh, I haven't shown you a map for a while...

  1. Looks like a much better spot, and even that room is up to par with places we've stayed in Belize. Glad you made it out of Phnom Penh!

    1. Yes, the location is so much better, we are very happy to be out of Phnom Penh.

The room is just ok, very basic and not super clean, dusty more than anything and it is actually too hot here for just a fan. We got moved to another room for our second night but we have just found it too hot so today we are moving to new accommodations. Still for the price we really aren't complaining about the place.

    1. No, no shower curtain. Most of the places that we have stayed in, the bathrooms are like this, it is what we call a wet bath. This is quite common in small motorhomes1campervans and obviously here in Southeast Asia as well.

  3. Have you tried the kampot peppers in any dishes? They are supposed to have a really good flavor.

    1. No we haven't yet but it sounds like maybe we should, a couple of people have now mentioned about the peppers here., we did see the peppers growing when we were up at Senmonorom though.
