Kayaking in Kampot

The first place we stayed here in Kampot had an advertisement in the lobby for river kayaking. It included pick up and delivery and a cocktail afterwards, but at $25 USD each, our first thought was that it was pretty expensive.

Then when we were out looking at accommodation options the other day, we had walked by a place that had a sign up saying kayak rental $5. That sounds like a better deal to us!

So yesterday morning before it got too hot out, we walked to the main road and took a tuk tuk back to that area. Sure enough, we rented a kayak for $5! And that is for the two of us... so $2.50 each. Much better than $25 each!

The place we used is called Retro Kampot Guesthouse.

There are quite a few small resorts along the river system.

Kayak selfie!
Gotta be careful not to drop the phone!

Old riverboat.

We did a circular route on the canals.

That was a fun and inexpensive way to waste a couple of hours in the morning!

We took a tuk tuk back into town.

We walked over to the lotus pond.

Unfortunately, not many flowers at this time of year.

Then we went and had some lunch.

I had a chicken salad and a beer.

Ruth had fish and a glass of wine.

Total bill was $12.20 USD ($16.50 CAD).

As we were sitting there after lunch, I saw this motorcycle coming with a dog hanging over the handlebars. Grabbed my phone just in time for a quick photo!

Back at the resort after lunch. The other couple who were here had departed, so we have the pool to ourselves again!

Ahhh. This is the life.

Sitting outside in the evening, Ruth noticed this big fellow above our heads. It's called a tokay gecko. It was pretty big... probably almost a foot long with the tail. Apparently they can be aggressive and territorial, but this one just sat up there and didn't move. They make a really loud, odd noise... but only occasionally.

Strange creature.

Today, we wait for our Vietnam visa to be approved. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't come through today, but I guess we'll see!

  1. That gecko is definitely interesting...a bit intimidating, given the size! Pool looks fabulous; as did the kayaking. Lovely place, but I do hope you get your visa soon.

    1. It was an interesting gecko, and they made a fairly loud noise, not like the little ones. Thank goodness it was outside and not in our room.

that was really pretty little spot and the pool was wonderful to have, especially in this heat. Our visas did finally come, yay!
