February Expenses

Our expenses did pretty well in February, all things considered.

We had a budget of $2,385 CAD, and we spent $2,457 CAD ($1,810 USD) for the month. And the extra was solely related to our decision to fly from Da Lat to Vinh instead of taking buses. Without that, we actually would have been under budget. So we're really pleased with that.

Here's how it all broke down (all figures in $CAD)...

Fuel: Yes, we had a fuel expense in February. A whole $2.75 to put gas in the scooter that we used towards the end of the month.

Groceries: We managed to spend $107 on breakfast supplies, tea, hot chocolate, snacks, and drinking water throughout the month. It's amazing that it added up to that much.

Meals out: We spent $605 on meals out... pretty much exactly what we thought it would be.

Alcohol: $96, almost exactly what it was in January.

Miscellaneous: $113, consisting of laundry, cellular data, foreign exchange fees, taxis, and local buses.

Entertainment: Total of $98, which is pretty good considering $33 of that was the hop on hop off bus tour we did in Ho Chi Minh City. The balance was scooter rentals, waterfalls, cable car rides, kayak rental. Not bad.

Overnight: We try to stick to under $1,000 CAD ($737 USD) a month for our accommodation, and that's actually really easy to do in these SE Asia countries. We spent $859 CAD during the month of February, so divided by 29 nights thats $29.62 CAD ($21.83 USD) per night. Some of those nights were as cheap as $12 a night, but that's what gave us the ability to splurge a bit during our last four nights at the fancy hotel in Con Cuong at $46.50 CAD a night.

Travel: We spent $579 on planes, trains, and buses, and visas.

So, not bad, and we're happy with that.

March is going to be a little higher though. We've got four different flights during the month, and we'll be ending the month in Kuwait City on the 31st. I think those four flights add up to over $700 CAD per person, so that's a chunk right there. Then we've also got accommodation in Maldives, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait... all expensive cities.

So, we've got a budget of $3,837 CAD ($2,826 USD) for the month of March.
