Paris is expensive!

So we're going to be spending a couple of nights in Paris with our daughter Lindsey and granddaughter Sadie at the beginning of May. And we knew in advance that Paris is expensive. But I figured that I'd be able to find some accommodation that is at least reasonably priced.

Nope!

And of course location is important. Yes, you can get cheaper deals outside the city center, but for the price to be noticeably different, you  might have an hour and a half commute into see the sites each way.

I must have spent at least three hours yesterday morning searching various sites. I'd say the average one night price for a hotel in Paris is around $500 CAD. Crazy. With many higher than that, and not many lower than that!

Ruth and I will be arriving at CDG airport, but Lindsey and Sadie will be coming on the Chunnel Train from London so they will be arriving at the Gare du Nord train station. So I was specifically looking at that area to make it convenient for them, as well as convenient to get into the city to see the sites, since we will only have a day and a half.

And I found something suitable. A one bedroom apartment with a pull out couch.

For €198 ($216 USD, $292 CAD) per night!

Holy crap!

Good thing we're only there for two nights. Get in, see the sights, and get the heck out!

Bristol, UK is not cheap either. We're going to do two nights there as well, at a cost of £150 ($191 USD, $259 CAD) per night. At least this one includes a nice breakfast.

And yes, I checked hostels and every other cheap option as well. The pricing is no better, and with a lesser quality stay.

And we'll be staying in Antalya, Turkiye for a couple of weeks next month. I haven't booked our accommodation yet, but it looks like it's going to be quite a bit more expensive than when we were there in December 2020.

End of next week, we start our migration towards Istanbul. We're flying Bangkok to Maldives to Abu Dhabi to Kuwait to Istanbul. I got a notification yesterday that the flight from Kuwait to Istanbul has been rescheduled... exactly 24 hours to the next day. This may not present a problem other than an extra night in Kuwait, but I'll have to get in there and research the implications of this and see if there are alternatives. Yes, all of these travel destinations over a fairly short period of time take a lot of planning.

It's almost a good thing we're having some down time here in Hua Hin in order to get all of this stuff sorted out.

We went out for lunch to a place we've been to before. We're starting to become regulars at a couple of places!

The lunch menu.

I had the chicken and cashews dish, and Ruth had Shrimp Tom Yum. Total bill was 210 baht ($5.85 USD, $7.95 CAD) for the two of us.

Then we stopped by the grocery store in the mall to pick up a few things, then back to the condo for an afternoon nap.

Then it was down to the gym for a workout followed by a quick cool off  and a few laps in the pool.

Nice gym setup at the condo.

Ruth in the pool.

Selfie by the pool!

More of the same today.

  1. Ooof, that IS pricey! But considering how many very inexpensive accommodations you end up with, I guess it will average out. After all, not everyone gets to visit Paris. I never have and probably never will. Can't wait to hear (and see) all about it!

    1. It is really pricey! I think this is the most expensive accommodation that we have ever paid for and it isn't even like it is a top of the line kind of place or in the centre of town either. You are right though, not everyone gets a chance to visit Paris and it is for four people too. We probably won't have done this if it hadn't been for Sadie, this is somewhere that she really wanted to see. Last year it was Cameron and him wanting to see a pr football team in Europe, so this time is was Sadie's choice. It is going to be a rushed time there but at least we will get to see the city that so many people talk about.
