The smallest city in England

We never did get any rain, but it was after lunch by the time some blue sky arrived. It turned out to be a nice afternoon, with high around 20C (68F).

Tony drove us over to the city of Wells... the smallest city in England based on the fact that it has both a cathedral and only 12,000 residents. We had gone through on the bus the other day and Lindsey had said she would like to go back and wander around. Helen stayed home... she has a bad foot and is trying to give it some rest.

The cathedral itself is the big attraction, but it's also just a nice typical English town to wander around. And, it's an ancient area... dating back to Roman times.

Even the main pub dates back to the year 1450!

The city is also known for its swans.

The main street through town.

The old Wells fountain.

Wells Cathedral, built between 1170-1239.

Zoomed in on the statues across the top.

Another view of Wells Cathedral.

Lindsey.

Vicars Close... the oldest purposely built residential street in Europe with buildings original buildings.
Built in 1363.

There are swans in Wells.

Entrance to the Bishop's Palace.

Another swan.

The Bishop's Palace and ruins.

It was free to enter the grounds of the Bishop's Palace, but they wanted a ridiculous £17.50 ($21.80 USD, $30 CAD) to enter the buildings. We took a pass on that, as we did the interior of the cathedral. Ruth and I had been inside the cathedral when we visited in 2012, and up until this past March it was by donation only. Now, it costs £14 ($17.50 USD, $24 CAD).

No thanks.

Gardens and statue.

Moat around the palace.

Another swan.

We stopped and did some grocery shopping on the way home.

You'll have to do your own foreign exchange, but prices are definitely cheaper here than in Canada. We remember the days when it was more expensive in the UK. But now, Lindsey says there are some items there that would be double the price in Nova Scotia. Of course housing and fuel have always been more expensive and that is still the case, although Canada is catching up in those categories as well.

Today, we are headed to Cheddar Gorge for some walking.
