Moving day, and getting ready to head out!

Friday was moving day at my mom's apartment. She was only moving from the 5th floor down to the 2nd floor, and from a one bedroom apartment to a bed/sitting room apartment without a kitchen, because all her meals will be done for her.

And that meant that a lot of stuff won't fit!

We arrived at 9:00am and got started. My older sister Elaine was there to help as well, but Ruth and I did all the big stuff ourselves. The building supplied a dolly and a cart, so that made fairly easy work of most items. The most difficult was probably her mattress. Why don't mattress makers put handles on them?!

We had made pretty good progress by noon, had a break for lunch, and then got back to it. By 4:00pm we had it set up well enough that she could spend the night in her new place. There was still a lot of small stuff to be done, and lots to give away or get rid of, but we have access to the old apartment throughout the month of August as well, because due to timing, she is stuck paying rent on both places for the month. While that's a bit of a waste of money, it is convenient as well.

I had been invited up to a friends cottage on Saturday night. One of the friends from my annual guys weekend had bought this place last year, and five of us got together on Saturday night for a little mini reunion.

Russ, Jeff, and Dave.

We had a big chunk of steak for dinner on the deck.

And a great campfire in the evening.

While I was out socializing, Ruth was back to my mother's place all day Saturday, and again Sunday afternoon, sorting through and cleaning things to give away. A kitchen full of items that my mother would never need again. And a whole bunch of other "stuff".

As people who own very little stuff, Ruth and I are always amazed by how much of it you can fit in a one bedroom apartment! My parents had downsized from a small bungalow (the one I had grown up in) to a 2 bedroom apartment, to a 1 bedroom apartment. I really didn't think my mother would still own so much. Anything useful is being given away to a charity that supports new immigrants to the area, and goodness knows that Canada has a lot of new immigrants.

Of course now that we have another motorhome, we have a lot more room for our own "stuff", and we sure have been buying a lot of stuff. We spent some time yesterday evening moving our stuff into Igor for our upcoming trip to Nova Scotia. We leave here on Wednesday. Not going very far the first day, just down to Ingleside, Ontario to have a one night visit with friends Bob and Denise (they were on two of our Mexico RV caravan trips). We're going to leave our son's car parked up at their place for a few weeks until we return to Ontario. Then we'll take three or four days to drive out to Nova Scotia where we're going to visit with our daughter and her family, and complete the list of things we need to do to Igor.

This morning, we are headed down to stand in line at a Service Ontario office to get Igor's ten day trip permit. I tried to book an appointment slot, but the next one available is August 12th! (Because we are officially Nova Scotia residents, and we bought Igor in Ontario, we need to get a temporary 10 day trip permit in Ontario to permit the transit to Nova Scotia where he will be permanently registered.)
